My 3rd generation Expedition fits 33.2" tall tires with 9" of tread width (I have 18" wheels, but the overall size of the tire gives you a comparison to go by). I don't have any rubbing issues with my tires (if you want a detailed explanation, look at my thread on 275/70/18 Duratracs). This is the absolute maximum overall size that I would recommend, otherwise I would expect rubbing issues. If you want a wider tread width than 9", then you should go a little shorter than 33".

For instance, 305/55/20 is also a 33.2" tall tire, but the tread width is 10.5". I think the added width would make this size tire rub when turning the steering wheel all the way. Unless someone has tried that size and knows for sure it doesn't rub, I suggest a smaller tire. 285/55/20 looks like your safest bet. 295/50/20 is wider yet shorter, so it may work. I can't guarantee those sizes won't rub, but if I had to guess at it, I would go with 285/55 or 295/50.

Maybe someone has 20" wheels and has mounted larger tires on their 3rd gen Expy. The only way to know for sure is to try. I know I was nervous when I had my new tires mounted on my Expedition!

The 305/55/20 tread width is 12" not 10.5".

See here for making comparisons.

I put the spacers on and have a 20" rim with 33" tires on it. No rubbing at all. I don't think 35's will fit, even with the spacers.

If you're going to put those tires on it I recommend getting the spacers, it brings it up just enough to give it a nice 4x4 stance.

Congrats on the truck!

The 305/55/20 tread width is 12" not 10.5".

I am going by Goodyear's measurements. The calculator that you linked is an excellent resource, but it does not give the tread width. That calculator gives the "section width." Section width is the distance from the widest point of the outer sidewall to the widest point of the inner sidewall. There is no universally agreed upon definition of tread width in the tire industry, but most manufacturers only include the tread of the top portion of the tire and do not include any tread on the sidewall in their tread measurements.

If a tire's standard measurement is 33x10.50x15, this means that the tire is 33" in diameter when fully inflated and not under any load, the section width is 10.5", and the tires fits a 15" wheel. The tires on my truck are 275/70/18. The calculator says that the standard size is 33x10.83x18. When I measure the tread on the top of my tire, it is about 9" wide. Goodyear's tread width measurement for that tire is 8.7". Goodyear's measurement of the section width of my tire is 11", and the calculator you linked says 10.83".
