My 3rd generation Expedition fits 33.2" tall tires with 9" of tread width (I have 18" wheels, but the overall size of the tire gives you a comparison to go by). I don't have any rubbing issues with my tires (if you want a detailed explanation, look at my thread on 275/70/18 Duratracs). This is the absolute maximum overall size that I would recommend, otherwise I would expect rubbing issues. If you want a wider tread width than 9", then you should go a little shorter than 33".
For instance, 305/55/20 is also a 33.2" tall tire, but the tread width is 10.5". I think the added width would make this size tire rub when turning the steering wheel all the way. Unless someone has tried that size and knows for sure it doesn't rub, I suggest a smaller tire. 285/55/20 looks like your safest bet. 295/50/20 is wider yet shorter, so it may work. I can't guarantee those sizes won't rub, but if I had to guess at it, I would go with 285/55 or 295/50.
Maybe someone has 20" wheels and has mounted larger tires on their 3rd gen Expy. The only way to know for sure is to try. I know I was nervous when I had my new tires mounted on my Expedition!
