Right there is what you quoted from the manual, it says “recommended”. That is what gives you “best performance”.
Again, one more time. The EB is tuned from the factory for 91+, it detunes for anything less. Buy a 60K vehicle and worry about less than the cost of 2 Starbucks coffees in price difference per tank. To me it just makes no sense, but that is your call.
The recommended fuel for ANY EB is 91+, will it run without damage on 87, yes. With less power, especially under high load conditions like towing, fully loaded, or extreme heat.

I agree on the octane stuff, just realize not everyone purchased a "60k" vehicle. I just got my '15 loaded XLT in mint condition in March with 49k on the clock for $22,500. Even new I doubt it was more than low $40,000's. The Starbucks coffee analogy is a good one.
However, people in the $20,000's price points probably aren't typically the people that would put 93 in them versus people who purchase them new for $60+. My $.02.
I am running 93 because I did my own test and found that it ran better on 93 and got better mileage, even if there is more cost.
