Expy likes to auto lock when I walk away, did I get a special secret feature?

I'm at a loss, expy auto locks on occasion (episodes can last for days). I thought I might be hitting the remote in my pocket but it will occasionally do it with key in my hand. I thought it might be my fob, so I switched to the second fob... still does it.

Any guesses?

This can happen, it doesn’t matter what manufacturer.

For example: park the car, get out and lock it. Then unlock the car and wait. Wait briefly and the car should lock itself again.

This supposed to auto lock the car if you hit the unlock button accidentally.

Also the tailgate may lock or not lock the car too. Mine rememberss the state of the door locks. If the car was locked, open the truck and then close it. It will remember if the doors were locked or not.

It's a proximity feature. Not sure when Expy's added the function, so I'm not sure what can be activated or not.

I know on my BMW's that they started to feature this about five years ago. You can customize your setup to whether you want it all off, or individually setup to unlock when approaching and/or lock when departing.

do you have it on your 2019? My Platinum does not have that feature. I tried to turn it on in FORScan but there was no feature there.

I haven't noticed this on my 2020 platinum but I do leave the key in it most of the time...

I have noticed mine unlocks when I have the key in my pocket and try to open the door, maybe they all do that but I know my 2019xlt did not do that. Maybe I should try taking the key with me and see if I notice any locking/unlocking action.

WAL (walk away locking) was only available in the Ford EV's 21 and up at first, and was introduced to the F150 and Mustang starting 2024. It would require the vehicle having an RFA module for it to work. Enabling the config in the BCM with FORScan alone won't activate it.....the vehicle would need to have specific hardware for it to work. In the case of the Lightning/Mach E, it required the BCM being updated to a certain software version before it worked even with the RFA module already in there from factory.

It does not seem like any Expos 2024 and under have an RFA. I was able to find the VIN of a 2025 Expo Platinum that already came off the assembly line, and this one DOES show it has an RFA in it. Seems like only 2025+ Expos will have this feature.

No I don't. Assuming OP has a MY23+ based on his avatar and those would have it. Only feature that the MY18+ have are the keyless entry via the touch activated door handles.

The above post from @rugedraw states that it does not have the feature. So, what is the correct answer? I looked it up and got conflicting answers.

I still have a lot to learn about the Expos, but I purposely looked up VIN's from higher trim trucks like the Platinums and they had no RFA in the module network. So, my comment was an educated guess, but a guess nonetheless. If a 2024 or under Expo DOES have the feature, that would be great because if one truck has it, then one way or another, all trucks can have it.

Just to confirm, I tried on my 2020 platinum and it does not do this at all.

A little off topic - but the passive locking feature came standard on my 1999 Corvette coupe. It also came standard on my wife’s 2014 Impala 2LTZ (new model style).

Ford has really been late to introduce this convenient feature.

I have a 22MY SPP Max. I don't see anything in the manual or the settings. It's not consistent but it happens enough not to be a coincidence. It locks as soon as the driver door closes. I'm also usually still close enough to trigger the proximity unlocking, although I have to admit that feature doesn't work consistently like it does on my 20MY Explorer.

My 22 Timberlane started doing this auto lock a few months ago and it doesn't happen all the time either.
And I can't make this feature work if I tried to.
It just happens when it wants to.
Very strange.
At first, I thought it was added with an automatic software update, but there is no evidence of this.
So, like the OP, does anyone know why this is happening?

Looks like it might be related to a poor battery. Expy started going into BSM after every drive and giving me other odd gremlins. Had the battery being replaced under warranty. I haven't experienced auto locking since.

Edit: NVM it's doing the auto lock again and the battery is a week old + yesterday I did a +200km trip.
