Galvanic corrosion! You must be an engineer, or chemist. It's funny some vehicles like my first edition keep the battery clean without doing a thing, others I've owned and worked on were a corrosion disaster. Depends on I guess fumes escaped, cables, atmosphere, and location both in vehicle and geographic. I'm sure one of the others has a more scientific answer.
