I was wondering if anyone out there was able to get Ford to replace the brake pads under warranty to get rid of the dust problem? I bought a 2003 FX4 in Sept and I have to take it into the shop to get the S spring fix. It was built in January 03 and has the same problem with the growl that some of the other folks have had. Any comments on the fix from those who had it done, any more problems?

From what I've read at other forums and other posts, Ford has new brake pad material, but many dealerships haven't gotten/received them yet.

How bad is this brake dust problem?

Does anyone have a picture? Preferably a before and after shot would be nice.

I've always assumed that stock brake pads always dusted a lot and I usually upgrade brake pads early on to minimize dusting and for better braking.

I have read people experiencing early brake pad wear and that the brake pads supplied with the Expeditions don't last long at all.

If you stay on top of cleaning, it's not bad. Our wheels get pretty dirty but on par with how my Audi dirtied them up.

Yesterday I was an Expedition with black wheels- until I realized it was brake dust! The wheels were -that- bad.

Look at Raybestos or similar CERAMIC pads. I have them on my '98 Exby, and dusting has been extremely minimal. If you buy Ford OEM, I am sure that they will not be any better and they will cost a lot more. I believe I have seen posts where they have them for the '03s.

Last I remember reading, aftermarket ceramic pads for the 2003 Expedition were not out on the market yet.

Well I took it in today for and oil change and had them right up the howling front end and just for the heck of it told them that its asame they put chrome wheels on it you never can see them from all the dust. The service guy wrote it up so I am curious to hear what they have to say. I just hope they get that front end figured out it sounds like I am on the unending cattle guard going down the road. Not good for a car with 2000 miles on it. I appreciate the info on the ceramic pads I am sure that is were I am headed. I think I am going to ditch these steel wheels and go with the alloy. This FX4 weighs enough they should have put air brakes on it:rolleyes:

I had a set of ARI pads placed on the front wheels last week and they work great so far.
Dust is at an absolute minimum after one week and we do a lot of in town driving.
At this point, we are completely satisfied with the ARI disc pads on our 03 EXPY.
We will keep checking for dust or lack of it, and will post further info as we go along.

Brake Dust

Well I took the Expy in last week and told them that it had a growl in the front end and told them what TSB to look at. They had to order parts should get it back this week. They said that there were no new pads available so I am going to switch to to the ARI pads after I get a little more use out of them and will put up with some dust. I hate having to replace parts when they are still good. I do appreciate all the great replys. Maybe someday Ford will start using brake by wire and put carbon brakes on there vechicles. I am sure people would pay the money if they new they could get 75,000 plus out of there original pads. It sure works great on airplanes.
