I'm having trouble with my 2007 Expedition XLT EL. There is no ABS light on, and the brake pedal started feeling spongy and going to the floor. My wife put it in the shop while I was out of town, they replaced all 4 brake pads, rotors, and the master cylinder, and said they bleed the brakes 7 times. Afterwards the pedal was still spongy and going to the floor. This time last year, I replaced the abs module, master cylinder, and two of the brake lines going from the master cylinder to the abs module. So I'm not sure what it could be and neither is the shop I had it at. It has been sitting for two weeks and I just got back home last night, went outside today and started it, and the pedal was fine, but I did notice after pumping the brakes a few times it started getting spongy again. My wife said sometimes the pedal is normal and other times it just drops right to the floor. Any ideas of what this could be? Not wanting to sink a whole lot of money into it, looking at selling it and getting a new expedition soon. But I'm not wanting to pass this problem along to someone else.

It sounds like you already dumped too much money into the brakes. Anybody that had to bleed the brakes 8 times is out in left field. You probably didn't even need rotors and the problem is still there but they are just throwing parts at it with your money. What a waste, I would take them to court for sure.

Did they purge the system of all the old fluid first? Dot-3 and Dot-5 don't mix well.

Sounds to me like you either still have a faulty master brake cyl, brake booster, or you have a leak somewhere. Whenever pedal goes to the floor, something def ain’t right.
I don’t see any reason they should’ve changed rotors or pads if that was your symptoms. I’d absolutely take it to another shop. They should be able to diagnose the issue and fix it.

Do you realize how much money he already spent on nothing? It would be off to court and not off to another shop for me.

Well, I'm not much of a mechanic but I do get stuff done when I need to. At least a couple times (over the years) after replacing the front brake pads on my 2003XLT .. the pedal would go right to the floor. Always concerned me but I ended up driving it around a bit each time and pretty soon all was good. The brakes on my 2003 are squishier than many vehicles, but work fine. Just relaying the experience. I dont think there's anything wrong with the old gal.

That’s because you (or whomever did your brakes) has to compress the pistons in the brake calipers. When you do that...the pedal will always go to the floor the first few times.
This is not the issue the OP is describing.

Small claims court will cost him far more in time and energy than that brake job.

If he wants his Expy fixed...another shop is what he needs to do. Otherwise sell it, but he indicated he doesn’t feel right selling it with a brake problem

So is that normal, happens every time (the situation I described)?
Didnt seem like it used to happen that way though but I cant remember everything.

Thanks for letting me know, I always wondered what that was.

Yes, of course you know this but I was responding to your quote
"Whenever pedal goes to the floor, something def ain’t right."
I thought that was incorrect, and I guess you agree.

I should change my name to MrStickler. MrEngineer? MrPITA?

Haha...nice. Yeah i was speaking about normal operation of the brakes...not specifically when you change them and have to pump the brakes back up.

I had an old Ford Fiesta (1979 model) that’s brakes went to the floor one day when driving it. That’ll put the fear of God in anyone. Expys weigh about 2 times that little car, not something I’d want to happen either driving it or being in front of it in traffic!

It was much more than brake job and he would win for sure.

Did you ever figure out what the issue is/was? I just acquired a 2007 Expedition and I am having the exact same issue. No ABS light is on, the brake peddle feels soft and occasionally goes to the floor. The fluid is full, the air has been bled out. It is definitely not a pad or rotor issue. It is definitely 100% something to do with the hydraulic system...
