My DW's 2013 King Ranch is our fourth, but first third gen Expedition. This morning her left brake light was out. This will be the third or fouth one. I'm pretty sure the first failure was on the right side. Not sure we ever had to replace one in the other cars, and they all had around 150k miles on them while hers has about 40. Any idea what's going on? Anyone else having similar experience with their brake lights?

Are the bulbs black, like soot on the inside, when you remove them? If the correct size bulb is being installed, and I'm sure it is, then I'd look closer at is the socket or the bulb holder itself. Does it appear to be damaged, signs of melting from heat, etc?

If the filaments are just breaking, then vibration is likely cause. Is there a soft rubber or foam gasket between the bulb holder and socket? There are two filaments in the bulb, smaller one for parking lights and the larger for park/turn. Maybe try a 3157LL - the LL stands for long life. Will cost a little more but suppose to be a little more robust. A 3157kLL or 4157 contains Kryton gas and is suppose to last significantly longer. Wattage is the same on 3157, 3157LL, 3157KLL, and 4157.

Thanks, Flexpedition. I'll check and get the better bulbs. May as well change out both sides.
