2006 Expedition. 420 code (passenger cat) Nov 2011. Had universal put on at Midas for $600. Solved.
March 2013 420 code at 2 shops and both 420 and 430 code at Ford dealer. Ford dealer said no other codes like mixture/02 sensors/misfiring, so he was convinced its the cats.
Vehicle does idle rough and otherwise compared to 6 months ago.
Midas today says no warranty. Only 12 months. I do not agree, but have no paperwork. EPA.gov site says 5 year, 25k warranty if new, but Midas guy did not agree with me on that one.
Midas did say he would install for $275 if I brought him new direct fits.
He said I can have my old ones and I can sell them to scrap for a bit of $$.
Walkers I can get for $600-$700.
Any suggestions otherwise before I spend a grand?
Thank you,
Scott A.

With a code 420 & 430 I would not be entirely convinced its the converters.

Has it been running fine otherwise?

Do you have emissions testing in your area?? This should not effect performance of the vehicle. Its more or less telling you that the converters are not efficiently "cleaning" the exhaust for a lack of a better word.

If you go on AutoZone's site they carry magnaflow and have all the part #'s there also. They list a couple different #'s for the direct fit so I'm not sure which one is the one you need but if you check the part # on Amazon it's usually quite a bit cheaper. I know when I was doing my exhaust the magnaflow cat-back that AutoZone lists for $867.99 I found on Amazon for $467 shipped so it might be something worth looking into.

Thanks gents

Toms 89 - Interesting comment that the 420 and 430 code together may say something else is wrong.

I could see that. But Ford dealer was the one that pulled that and I talked to the service manager about just those "other" possible issues. He said his analyzer would have picked them up.

I am not done with Midas: My argument is that they provided the cat in Nov 2011 and no way they can reduce the federal warranty requirement of 2yr/25k unless it was a specialty item or I provided it. I called Midas corporate support center and will be getting a call back. Hopefully with some good news.

Anyway, the Expedition seems to be running great with no other ignition or fuel issues. I put all new Motorcraft coils and plugs in when I bought it in mid 2011.

Thanks again for your replies and your help.

You could also try looking through performancepeddler.com. You can "name your price" which pretty much means you offer a dollar, and they give you a coupon code.

If it was me I think I would be looking at a possible intake gasket,or a possible issue with the sealing of the air filter to throttle body. Most of the time when there is a ineffinciney with the cats there is a Air/Vacuum leak from the air Filter to the Intake. If I remember corrctly it will make the computer go into a rich mode and the Converters can't burn the fuel, which then goes into a Cat ineffencily
