I pulled the trigger and purchased and installed the 2023 RXP Ultimate Catch Can. After about 2K miles I decided to drain them to see what I got. My Expedition makes latte's. What drained out of the large can was milky just like a Frappuccino. It's definitely oil and water. The stench was incredible of oil and gas (and something else I can't place my nose on it). I didn't get a drop out of the small can. I figured I'd leave a photo here and see what others get/got.IMG_7137.jpg

It just occurred to me that folks using a catch can might be getting erroneous reports when getting the oil tested at a lab.

I read an article saying there could be viscosity errors in the reports because of the water and fuel mixed with the oil. I was concerned about the fuel smell, but more reading told me that's common. Makes sense since there is some blowby even with brand new engines.

Mines looks like black coffee and watery. Smells like gas/oil mixture. I have a JLT catch can tho. Only collects from passenger bank

I contacted RXP about not having anything in the small can (driver's side connection) and they said that's perfectly normal.
Then whats the point for spending the extra money for a can that collects on the driver side for then? lol

In my 2016, JLT installed on passenger side only. The quantity and look of the collected fluid varies over the seasons. It seems in winter it collects more and is “milkier” and fills around 1k miles. In Summer iI is more oil-like, always with gas smell, and about 2k miles.

Speaking as a GT500 owner, a catch can should be mandatory on super or turbo charged engines:
1. You certainly don’t want that crud sucked back into the intake manifold. It will make a gummy mess. Eventually will gum up an intercooler.
2. That stuff lowers the effective octane rating potentially inducing damage or pulled timing.
3. Only need one on the passenger side. That’s where the vacuum occurs.
4. Should not ever have oil in a can on the drivers side unless there is something very wrong with your engine.

Same as Big_O on my 17 Expy. Milky in the winter months and black/brownish in the summer. Always has a raw gasoline smell.

What is the amount you all collect ?
I change my oil and filter every 5K mi and my can collects 1 to 1-1/2 oz it looks like dark coffee and smells like gas.

Thanks for the useful information and reassurance that my 2017 Latte's are relatively normal.

These pics are of the passenger side (only) can after less than 1K miles. Some relatively cold temperatures but nothing that cold here in KY (yet). Same gas, oil smell, very liquid on top, creamy thick mess at the bottom of the can. IMG_1755.jpegIMG_1756.jpeg

Merry Christmas everyone!

I'm the same as @1970Maverick, i've never had more than 1-1.5 oz and it's always a pretty thick black coffee look. honestly it smells but nothing I wouldn't expect. that milky texture makes me wonder if you're getting an unusual amount of moisture in your system or could small amounts of coolant cause that milk-ing? Dunno, but i don't like it.

Hello, I have a similar experience. I installed two cans. One per side with my last oil change about 1,500 miles ago. I'm getting ready for a long trip so I checked the oil. It looked great. Dark caramel. Still transparent. Darker than new but still only dark brown and not black. Then I pulled the catch cans. Each one had about 4 oz of oil floating over a few oz of latte just like you show here. The oil in the can was black and nasty. The very bottom of the can had a light brown gel like crud in the bottom. Like a tablespoon of flour had settled to the bottom.

I am interested to learn about your experience with the rather expensive RXP can after you had it for while now.
If I understand it right these cans have drain on the bottom which would suite me well as I have movement restrictions in my arm and shoulder.
Are these cans worth the money (around $ 700+
(CAD)) in your opinion?
Does anyone know about another proven brand with a drain valve? I do not seem to find one on Amazon or EBay
Could J&L cans be retrofitted with a drain valve anyone?
Thanks

So glad I found this post. Mine was substantially more "milky" and/or "frappucino-ee" than ever before, while doing my oil change over the weekend. Worried me a bit but this exact post helped me feel a little more at ease. Thanks again all.

I've started draining both cans at every oil change and there is still very little in the drivers side can. 90% of my driving is highway, so I don't think I'll catch as much as a daily local/hard driver. Been doing more looking: FordTechMakuloco on YouTube is showing that the newer Expy's/F150's have less buildup on the intake valves with the addition of Direct AND Port injection. I've simply seen too many valves on DI cars that are completely crudded up watching I Do Cars on YouTube. I highly recommend both those channels. All of this stuff has me convinced I made the right decision with a good quality can. Maybe someday I'll crack open the intake and take a look to see what my intake valves look like...

I seem to get I get less fluid in the JLT catch can with extended highway driving. I changed my oil a few hundred miles before a ~3500 mile highway trip and changed the oil at ~4,400 miles and there was not much fluid captured and it was very black. Other drain intervals have been with more typical mom taxi mixed driving and have had the more milky espresso appearance.

I don't see how the absence of this crap being ingested by the engine would have any negative impact or impose any error on oil analysis.

I agree completely. Anything to get as many miles as possible out of these vehicles!!!
