Just had the front ones done and the mechanic was an idiot. Figured I would try to do them my self. Is it easy and what am I going to need? As far as I was told (when the front ones where done), I only needed pads on the rear.

It's easy... You can even youtube videos about how to change brakes.
Now I have an Explorer and an Expy... Did the brakes on both during the summer. I believe you will need a Torx set (if not i got then its for the explorer lol) to get the 2 bolts out of the caliper.
Make sure you get a big C clamp and that blue stuff to quiet brake squeak
Why do you think your mechanic was/is an idiot?

Generally the backs are easier than the fronts. Needed torx set for my front but not my back. C clamp is useful but i prefer my large channel locks to compress the piston.

you can save a chuck of money doing your own brake job. My son got an est on rear brakes on his mustang for $350. we did front and back for $52.

ps. if you think your mechanic is an idiot then find one that has some brains.
it will save you money, time and aggravation.

It might be possible, depending on the wheel. Make sure to check the number of threads the lugnuts are threaded on. There should be at least 5 full turns.

I know on my roommate's car, he dad bought him some rims, but they'd hit up against the calipers, so they threw on some generic spacers (not hub or wheel centric). His front wheel lug nuts are held on by 2-3 turns. I've been telling him to just throw some stock rims back on, but he's been putting it off.

But yes, the rears should be easier since you don't have to deal with the anti-rattle spring. Just make sure to torque everything back up. Wouldn't have your caliper to fall off :p
