clunking noise when switching into reverse

sup dudes,

dont know if anyone has this problem but the shit is killing me.

on my 99 xlt 4wd i get a loud clunking noise when i switch it into reverse.
i just changed the all the ujoint yesterday and still. i initially thought that was the issue but I guess it isnt.

does anyone have any ideas??

How many miles are on the truck? It almost sounds like a worn rear diferental.

sounds like the diff wasn't set correctly, and now you have lost your preload in the bearings on the pinion causing the clunk

I'm guessing this sound came gradually. How would this happen if the preload went bad? just curious. Also, how would you check for bad differential? put it in neutral and turn the yoke?

the best bet would be to just get a rebuilt kit right? and just start off fresh?

YES it would happen over time... low fluid can wear the carrier bearings faster caused by foaming the fluid... once the bearings have some play in the the gears don't fit correctly then its just a matter of time till the pinion bearings go bad and the clunk is there...

six states disturbution, carries the full rebuild kit for the 9.75 as well as the dealer i would think maybe even napa

you need to tear it down and see if you are needing new ring and pinion as well that could get spendy
