What are the actual components of the "Trailer Tow Prep Pack" on a 3rdG Expy? I checked FordEtis, and it's listed in the options for the VIN. But, the truck only has a flat 4-pin connector. Though this was odd, as I would have thought they would include a round 9-pin connector too.

It depends on what year the "3rd Gen" is as to what components make up the towing package.

Typically it includes:

Specific swaybar
Wiring for 4 pin and 7 pin connectors
Auxiliary transmission cooler
HD radiator
a wiring kit for the brake control

Some models integrated TBC (depending on year and trim level).

This is a 2007, and sorry, I did mean 7 pin connector, not 9 pin. And when you say"wiring" for the 7 pin connector, are you saying the actual connector may not be there? On my '04 Explorer with tow package, the connector was already in place (I assume put in by the factory). Before I consider towing with the '07 Expy, I want to know how I can see with my own eyes and be sure the tow package is actually there. If it is there, but there's just no connector yet, that's easy.

Your eyes won't be able to tell the difference in radiators but you can tell if there is a transmission cooler and 7 way plug installed. You can also pull the OASIS report which will show how the vehicle was configured as well as service reports and history.

This link may help:

On my 2008, with the $395 "heavy duty trailer tow" option #536, a 150 amp alternator replaces the normal 130 or 135 unit and the turn signal flasher is claimed to be "heavy duty". This is in addition to what montecarlo31 posted already.

My 7-pin is factory welded to the hitch with the flat 4 below it. Rear-end ratio could be a factor in tow package/tow prep package, and in your towing capacity.

IIRC there should also be larger rotors for the rear brakes on tow packages.

Negative the rotors are all the same. His 2007 would have seen the alternator bump as it didn't have e-fans creating a major draw and they could get away with a smaller alternator then.
