All,

I am in the final throws of purchasing a 2001 EB. everything is in great shape and I only have a couple thing to check on the final visit.

I had a mechanic look at the vehicle and he lifted it up and we spent 45 minutes going over the truck...the only bad thing was that the power steering pump was a little dirty...or dirtier than the tech might expect....there are no bad sounds or other indications that it is going bad....

so from a worst case scenario i wanted to check on what the cost might be to replace a power steering pump? let's say it goes out completely in a year..... (generally parts and labor)...even ballpark figures will work...200? 500? more?

the car has 39500 miles....it will sell with a power train warranty (that would cover the PS) for 3k miles or 3 months

Other than that the other suggestions were to flush the transmission, brakes, radiator and make an oil change.....this will give me a good baseline to keep up with maintenance....

Thanks for any feedback.

OK...a quick check online show a PS pump is ~$200

Any idea on the labor for one? Maybe 3-4 Hours at $50/hour?

Maybe a total of $400-500 .....souind about right?

Sure, that sounds good. There are a couple of folks on this forum that work at dealerships, so maybe they will post back using the standard rate guides they have.

On the other hand, I wouldn't worry about the pump. I have not seen anything on any of the Exby/Ford forums to indicate that they are a problem.

Definitely go in to have ALL the fluids changed. I do this once a year (yeah, maybe excessive, but great insurance), and as a matter of fact, will be dropping mine off this weekend just for this work.

Make sure you get your tranny POWER FLUSHED. And don't forget about the gear oils in the diffs and transfer case.

Finally. Give the engine a good wash. I use the Gunk product, and go over/under/around the engine with a couple 2 or 3 cans a couple of times a year to keep it clean. I do this so that I can spot a problem (How many times has a buddy opened his hood to "see what is the matter", and all you see is a great big greaseball of an engine???). Anyway, that should clean the PS pump, and let you see if it is the real leak point point, as it could just be a hose.
