The 1-10 indicator that shows the current gear and is mounted inside the tach on my 2018 Expy crapped out this morning. Has this happened to anyone else, and is there a known fix?

Please define "crapped out". Perhaps try using the "+" button near the gear selector to see if the current gear display reappears on the instrument cluster.

When I press the manual shift button on the selector dial, I see an orange reading in the center of the center of the display. "M10" for example, when I'm on the highway. When I switch out of manual mode, the display turns off. What is missing is the vertical 1-10 display with the current gear highlighted.

Wow. I am as the bag, filled with hammers.

Thank you.
We have all been there. While some might say RTFM, the manual is the size of a Novel with only 3 pieces of useful information...so not surprising people don’t read it (I know I haven’t, so the forum, here, helps for these odd features).

I just bought a used 2018 Max Platinum, and my gear indicator is not working. I am also unable to switch gears in manual mode. The “drive mode” button works, but the + and - buttons are not functioning in any manner. I’m aware of how they work because I use them regularly in our 2015 EL XLT (different “form factor” but same function). Tried searching before resurrecting and old thread, but I cannot find anything specifically about the +/- buttons actually not working.

Edit: Already left battery disconnected overnight to “forget” previous owner’s shifting strategy.

I remember when I had Ford do the reflash of my pcm for the cam phaser recall (after i had recently bought my 19 used) . I picked up my expy after the re-flash and noticed the 1-10 gear selector was missing from its usual spot on the cluster. I turned around and was telling the service advisor that whatever they did they made the gear indicator go missing. The service advisor had no clue how to get it back and neither did I and I was literally yelling at him saying they messed up my expy and whatever they did with the re-flash they screwed something else up with the computer. I finally left the dealer and eventually did a google search and found out about the pressing of the "+" while in drive to get the gear indicator back... I felt bad sorta that I was yelling at the poor service advisor but then again....as a Ford Service Advisor, he should have known how to get that feature back on the display.

Hitting the + doesn’t do anything in drive or in manual mode. I know the little screen still works because “M8” appears when selecting manual mode. I might try pulling up the console and disconnecting/reconnecting the shifter along with another overnight battery disconnect. Would hate to spend ~$200 for another shifter for it not to be the problem.

I was able to find another shifter/gear selector out of a 2019 on eBay. I left the battery disconnected overnight and installed it, but it still did not fix the issue. My +\- buttons do not work with either shifter installed. I cannot display gears, lock out gears, or shift manually in M. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would check for a disconnected plug or wiring. If my memory is correct, then those buttons communicate to a remote via either ground or high signals or wires. It is not CAN. It allowed Ford the versatility of using the column shifter or the console shifter for the function.
