Anyone have a dash cam setup in their Expy yet? This is my first go at a dash cam so I am going fairly cheap. $70ish for the camera (DDPai mini 2) and then a 12v to 5v adapter and cable run. I am also going to use a fuse tap for switched power.

Any suggestions and things go look out for would be great.

I saw an earlier post about a member who installed a Garman Mini dash cam, but I can't find it now. Looked like a nice setup

There are a couple threads on this here, one in particular talked about sourcing power. I’d try the sear feature to find it, it’s on the 4th gen section.

I need to install one as well, I want a 2 camera set up but I just don’t have the time to dedicate to this project at the moment. I really wish the doggone cameras all over this truck were useable for this.

For a quick solution, I purchased a magnetic phone mount that suction cups to the windshield and I use my iPhone with a dash cam app. It’s an easy solution until you have time to install a dedicated camera. I’ve been pleased so far and the magnetic suction cup mount was only about $15 on Amazon.

I have a Garmin on my '08 tucked behind the mirror and wired through the mirror conduit to the fuse box. Can't tell it's there.

My fear is I’d just keep this set up and never hardwire an actual camera. Real talk though is that I need to just bite the bullet and do it because people drive crazy these days.

A bit off topic, but related as it pertains to finding a power source. I’m wanting to hardwire my radar detector in and want to find a switched power source (i.e. power only when the key is on). Has anyone done this or pulled power from the drivers side? Obviously can go to the fuse box, but would love to not have to probe wires if possible. I’d go off the mirror, but have a mute button I want to mount low, so need to be under the dash. On my previous F250, there was a spot under the steering column, but it ended up being to difficult to get to, so I had to go all the way to the fuse box.

There’s a thread on this as well in the 4th gen section. You can wire radar from the rear view mirror.

I put a viofo on my 06 and moved it to my 17 when I upgraded. It's about 3 years old now and working well. I put a 256m card in it.

I sourced power from an aftermarket radio in the 06, which turned off power when key off, door open, or about 5 minutes after key off but door not opened. The viofo shuts itself down after about 3 minutes if it doesn't sense power.

In the 17 I dressed a standard mini / micro usb from the port in the console up the A pillar and across the top of the windshield, tucked under headliner, pillar and rub\g. You cannot see it except a couple of inches at each end.

It recorded an entire trip to Florida and return, about 3000 miles total and still had room on the card. It automatically locks the current file in case of collision or by pressing "panic" button.

Playback I have set at about 3x actual speed. A 10 minute viewing shows about 30 mins of drive time. After that it moves to a new file.

I like it. Image and resolution are excellent.

I have the HD Mirror Cam. $50 at Target. It clips over the rear view mirror and has a hidden 3" video screen. It comes with a 8gb card(8hr) and built in battery( 1hr). It also plugs in to a power point. The camera can be turned to front or back. It records sound. It has motion detection and night vision. I like that I can move it from car to car. It is easy to use. Thumbs up.

Has anyone mounted a rear camera? If so how did you route the wire and address the opening rear window and rear deck?

I’m waiting for it to cool off some so I don’t die from heat stroke. I’ve looked at the trunk and was curious about the existing wiring harness route that goes into the deck lid. Unfortunately I obsess about things like wires and I definitely don’t want to see them.

I’ll have to take a few more pics of the final install. I guess I only took pics in progress.

I can’t really tell what’s going on in the second pic but I see in the first you m were able to use the existing harness conduit. How easily did the plastic panels come off and do you have any tips on where to apply pressure to get them to release? It looks like you began your run from the rear, correct? I’ll try not to pepper you with too many questions lol. Thanks for the info!

The second pic shows the inside of the conduit under the trim showing that it can be routed.

I sent it to the right in order to use the 12v power point.

Just sneak it out by the window.

I fished it through the conduit:

And then next to the rubber.

I left enough to allow the glass to open.

Excuse the dirt, went down a gravel road this weekend.

Another angle.

Ah, ok I understand now. So you are using two separate single dash cams to get a dual cam set up? So does that rear power source shut off after some amount of time after ignition is shut off?

Thanks for the pics, I’m relieved to know know the process now.
