2003 5.4L XLT 130K miles. Just purchased vehicle. Other than annoying, is the differential whine anything to be concerned about?

Hell yeah. I know this site is for Expeditions, but I also have a 2002 Explorer w/ 73K and had to have the rear end completely removed. I hardly drive the Explorer, you know who drives it, took it on the highway, and the whine was terrible over 40 MPH. Take my foot off the gas and the whine stopped so i know it is not tires. had it to my dealer. They charged me 1300. I got 10 percent off when I balked about the failure.I have driven several club wagons and towed for years. had a 67 GTO that I really beat up. This 2002 never towed, or had any lumber or drywall in it. Why a failure?? Come to find, my inlaw has a 2004 Explorer and same issues with the rear end. I hope Expeditions don't have the same problems.
