Your 17 has the .ecoboost engine vs the v8 in your 07. Two totally different drive trains. The 3.31 gears with the v8 will struggle much more than the same gears with the turbo motor, because the ecoboost has much more torque at much lower rpm. To tow adequately and comfortably with the 5.4 you should have 3.73 gears. Seeing 3k rpm while towing with either motor is not a concern and either motor can tow that way all day and all night without issue. My 5.4 (with 3.73 gears) would tow at 70mph in 4th gear at 3k rpm without issue. The ecoboost (also with 3.73 gears) pulls the same load in 6th gear at 2k rpm.

I hope this is not too late to be of use to you, but I also have the same equipment on my 2008. In June of last year I towed a 7500 pound (plus cargo) travel trailer from Nevada to North Carolina, and back again. As you can imagine I traveled over all sorts of terrain and I experienced absolutely NO problems. I also have 3.31 gears. If you’ve kept up on maintenance you should be fine. I took mine to a mechanic I trusted to give a once-over before I left and he gave it a Good-To-Go.

I do use tow/haul which, according to the book, doesn't lock out 6th. It changes shift points and adds transmission braking. Agreed 3000 isn't excessive, but it sure sounds like it.

Thanks, Tim, I was under the impression Tow/Haul limited 6th gear engagement but a check of the manual indicates it allows all gears. (Trust but verify. :) ) Don't recall if I used it before but will tow using it on my next camping trip which will be over the Blue Ridge.

This feature was not on my previous '07 truck.
