Does towing package impact MPG?

Talking to dealer today he mentioned that MPG is somewhat impacted by towing package due to different drive ratio. This only mildly makes sense - as I’d imagine transmission would compensate for that - so it would only manifest at high (where 10th gear is used) highway speeds. Besides I’d imagine Ford would have to accurately report it on window sticker.

Anyone knows how much MPG is impacted (if any) and by how much?

My Limited with heavy duty trailer tow gets about 20 MPG on the highway with 93octane and about 75mph cruise.
Around town it usually averages 14.5 to 15mpg.

No material difference, and in this size of vehicle especially. 4x4 robs way more efficiency than the rear end will. Mine isn’t a 4th gen but a 3rd gen 5.4L with 4x4 and tow package/3.73 rear. It gets 15ish around town and 18 MPG highway. Trucks without 4x4 and the 3.31 rear only saw 1-2 MPG more on paper (up to 20 highway). That’s sacrificing a lot of capability and get up and go for 1-2 MPG IMO. With the 10 speed however rear end probably doesn’t matter as much, just as from the 4 to the 6 speed.

Mines been converted to electric power and being moved up and down on an electric lift.

On a side note, previously averaging 13mpg in sport mode trouble shooting with the service dept.

Well one way of a round trip I averaged 70-75 getting 7.2 mpg the other way I averaged 60-65 getting the 8.6 I mentioned above. Both directions I used tow/haul mode. I drove from Spokane to the West entrance of Yellowstone so I went through a lot of mountains, sometimes 3-6% grade. Transmission downshifting and computer braking helped a lot, but hurt the mpg. Transmission temp never got above 225deg. 500ish miles one way

In short, yes. You get a different rear gear ratio but you gain a bunch of acceleration because of this. If this is a worth while trade off to you go for it. I got tow package because I tow sometimes but I would have gotten that axle regardless because I like the feeling of being pushed into the seat when I stab the throttle.

This was the best evaluation I wish all companies wpuld use!

Hell if I get more than 9mpg in a car/truck I'm a happy man. My foot and brain just aren't on the same page.

I would think in town, you may actually get a bit better, truck has to work less to accelerate and gets to top gears quickly. Perhaps a small impact on highway, but it appears nothing to change the Maroney
