So I have a P0022 code, Drivers side Bank 2 Cam Position sensor. I went ahead and changed the $20 sensor although this forum says most likely it will be the VCT. The new sensor didn't help so I replaced both VCTs. I still had the code. I then did a fresh oil change with filter as I heard that it could be related to oil being too thin. Still have the code. Just the P0022, no other codes.

What else can I check before I take it in? Hoping it is not tensioners or phasers.

A few years ago I had the timing chains, gears and chain guide changed one broke causing me to slip a tooth.
I have been running Mobile 1 5W-20 Full Syntehtic for a many years. Would 5W-30 be a better choice?

I have a basic OBD code reader, but am looking at getting a wifi dongle OBD so I can read the oil pressure when the engine is running on my iPhone. I hear the 5.4L may have weak oil pumps after time and that low oil pressure can cause the VCT to retard the timing. Maybe someone has more info on that.

2005 Expedition EB 5.4L with 130K.

Thanks.

P0022 - Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 2)
Description: See the description for DTC P0012.
Possible Causes: See the possible causes for DTC P0012.
Diagnostic Aids: See the diagnostic aids for DTC P0012.

P0012 - Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
Description: The comprehensive component monitor (CCM) monitors the variable cam timing (VCT) position for over-retarded camshaft timing. The test fails when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in a retarded position.
Possible Causes:
  • Camshaft timing improperly set.
  • Continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber.
  • VCT solenoid valve stuck open.
  • Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit).
Diagnostic Aids: This DTC is a functional check of the VCT unit. Diagnose any base engine concerns related to the engine oil pressure or engine timing. Refer to the Workshop Manual Section 303-00 Engine System.

HK15 KOER DTCS P0011, P1381, P0012, P1383, P0021, P1386, P0022 AND P1388:

  • Note: Only diagnose VCT actuator and circuit indicated by the DTC.

Oil contamination in VCT systems can cause positioning errors. VCT systems require an oil filter specific to the application.
  • Check the operation of the VCT solenoid and check for a stuck or sticking solenoid valve caused by contamination. If the valve is stuck, check the spider bracket for contamination prior to installing a new solenoid.
  • Check vehicle oil filter identification for proper type.
  • Engine at normal operating temperature.
  • Clear the DTCs.
  • KOER Self Test.
  • Check for KOER DTCs:
Are DTCs P0011, P1381, P0012, P1383, P0021, P1386, P0022 or P1388 present?
Yes No
Key in OFF position. INSTALL a new VCT actuator. Unable to duplicate or identify the fault at this time.

GO to Z1 .

Just to close the loop on this, I had flushed the oil, changed the oil, changed the VCT solenoids, had a mechanic check it out for a few hundred dollars. Still had the code and it ran in retarded time mode. It ran great, just bad gas mileage. The mechanic said that for many more hundreds of dollars they could do oil pressure checks, drop the oil pan and check the oil pump, it would cos more to fix than it was worth, or possibly not be fixable. His advise was to sell it as a mechanics special. ($600 to $900). I decided not to fix it and just drove it for 9 more months as-is with the bad gas mileage and check engine light. I then ordered up a Tesla Model 3. Here's the good part I traded in the Expedition to Tesla and got $2,750. I've had the Model 3 for over a year and only miss be able to haul plywood.
Thanks for all the help. Great site, users, and admins. Great resource.

After seeing the post above I’m gonna get my dang 73 Ford F-100 outta the cow pasture, fix it and drive it from now on. No computer, no codes and very easy to work on. Sometimes new technology really stinks, bad. It even has an AM radio, God save the Queen.......

Thats why I dont want anything newer that 2012. Each year they just keep adding useless gadgets that will break sooner than later.
