Ok totally confused about this. My dip stick says Mercon only. Dealer is telling me Mercon V. My owners manual says do not use Mercon V. Called ford headquarters they say I can use Mercon V.

What. Anyone have any experience with using Mercon V in your transmission? Should I drain it and use Dextron/Mercon

I put Mercon V and have spent close to 200 dollars in buying Mercon V. I feel shudder at 30mph

It says the same thing in my owners manual of course but ford issued service bullietin (link below) saying it was being replaced with mercon V. I was told by my "tranny guy" not to use it as it has occasionally been known to cause converter shudder in earlier trannys. Many here have switched over with success but I decided not to risk it.

Ford no longer makes mercon...only mercon V but you can get it in other brand names listed for use with mercon.

I also have not idea why this would be a problem unless it causes older worn clutches to slip due to the better lube. I will ask him tomorrow about your situation and recommendation if I can remember.

What I find curious is mercon V originally was not backwards compatible until ford stopped making mercon. Then mercon V was listed as suitable replacement for older mercon only vehicles.

Just so your aware. My "tranny guy" is a full time transmission specialist. He also races and rebuilds racing trannys on the side. He rebuilt my C4 for my mustang which has held up great for me. I had him replace my tranny fluid and check my tranny this past summer in my Expy. He used the older dextron III/mercon and replaced some pressure valve which he said was worn and my tranny has been holding up well thus far under some pretty high stress conditions.

I asked him about your situation. I know your not going to like this but he recommended draining all of the mercon V, converter too via drain plug in it and replace filter. Refill with dextron III/mercon and as long as your clutches have not had time to glaze over you should be fine. Said you might also try anti-shudder additive from auto zone if I remember correctly!?

hey thanks I just drained my torque converter and oil pan/ filter and put Mercon Dextron111 into it. I put in 14qrts? I think some of the Mercon V is trapped in the transmission. Napa guy said it takes 16qrts?
