New question.... I am wondering if a torque converter from a 4r100 trans will work with the E4OD trans? Wondering because someone here locally has a new one for saleI can buy off them for $100. If it is transferable I'm going to jump on it.
Well little update... Separated transfercase from transmission today. Found some oil in between the two. I'm thinking it may be from the transfercase as I drained nearly a quart from the fill plug before pulling the drain plug. Also drained the torque converter to find some metal flakes, almost like glitter size, with a few small chunks of metal as well. Here's hoping tomorrow when I get the transmission down and out that there isn't any internal damage and the metal was just from the converter...
Another update... Torque converter is definitely toast. Wish I could upload a video. Shaking the converter sounds like I'm shaking a box of empty spray paint cans. I'm going to open the trans to verify condition of internals, but as of now the clutches that I can see after removing the valve bodies, look to be in good shape. Not saying they aren't burned, but I will be digging deep into this thing to make sure everything is still good internally. Also when I dropped the trans pan there was only very fine stuff on the magnet and the filter had caught a good amount of metal flakes(tore the filter open to see what was in it.)
Yet another update, if anyone is watching.... Gutted the transmission yesterday. Looks as though it had been rebuilt not to long ago. Clutches and steels are in great condition, along with planetaries and other hard parts in there. I'm going to be taking valve bodies to work and toss them in the parts washer. Only parts I found "messed up" so far are a couple bushings. One in the pump and one about midway in the transmission(can't remember off the top of my head which one exactly). They had the fine metal stuck in the oil groove and had marred the bushing lightly. I'm going to purchase a new bushing set and put the trans back together with existing internals(after cleaning every thing of course). Still gotta get a new torque converter when money is available...

these trannies all use the same driveshaft? for a given setup?
like say 4x4, 9.75 rear etc

Depends on engine/transmission combo you have. I believe the slip yoke is different between them. Someone with more knowledge will correct me if I'm wrong. I also believe the shaft length may be different as well. I'm not 100% on that so don't quote me there.
Well just another tiny update. Was at a pawn shop earlier today and found a nice set of bolt extractors (ridgid 20 piece 35585) that I bought for $20. Missing one of the smaller drill bits but I'm not complaining. Here's hoping this will help with getting the broken exhaust manifold studs out without having to go the helicoil route.
With the transmission, everything has been cleaned thoroughly and new bushings have been installed. Still gotta get me a torque converter, fix the exhaust issues and get some new fluid and I should be good to go. This is taking longer than I would like but I can't complain when I'm the only source of income in the house. Just taking my time and making sure everything is done the righ way/the way I want it done.

I am not the income source in my household [I am the Childcare source] and I still take months to fix things. I still have some stuck bolts on my control arms that I should do something about. and I need to turn the rotors...
Another update: got all the exhaust manifold studs out without pulling the head. I have been happier than a pig in $#!+ for the past hour. I tried the extractor route. Got the one that was broken flush out no problem. The one I broke and had about 1/2" sticking out tried to grab it with another extractor and snapped it shorter. So welded a nut to what was left sticking out and that did the job.
