Eco Mode

Does Eco Mode actually help with better gas milage? I find that around town I actually do not get better gas milage. The Expy seem to lug more in Eco Mode and I find myself needing to give more pressure to the gas peddle.

What are you all finding...?

I hardly use ECO mode. It typically will upshift very early and wait to downshift until you really press on it. I use it rarely to adjust the CCD suspension to "soft" or compliant from Normal.

Feels to me like it just filters the gas pedal inputs to allow for smoother acceleration.

It works for me, mainly in town settings. It works less on the hwy unless your speed is around 60. I havent been using eco and my lifetime avg has lowered from 18 to 16. I do wish the shifts in eco mode were less pronounced, atleast in my truck. you can feel it shift and it feels like it takes forever for the shifts to engage, like a long shift gate.

Randy Schmidt, A day after you posted, I posted the same question (great minds etc.) plus , what's the FE effect of Sport?

So far I see no leaf FE number. Just feelings from "I don't notice" to " seems sluggish".

Surely Ford and GM Transmission Engineering and Marketing must have had itemized, detailed improvement numbers to justify the huge, multiyear, engineering, development and manufacturing facilities effort on the 10 speed including these whizz bang marketing features created via its integrated electronic control mechanism.

Looking through the 572 page Owners Manual, I see no numbers, just words.

Does Ford Motor Company read this Forum? Do they respond?

Same here. Eco seems to interact far better with Adaptive cruise (or the inverse), something due to how it impacts gear changes I imagine. I'm not sure of FE impacts, but it seems to make adaptive cruise function better.

Sometimes I prefer the more seamless gear shifting and gradual acceleration of ECO mode (like when I have the grandparents in the back). But I wish there was a way to select the NORMAL mode suspension, or even the SPORT mode suspension, independently of the transmission programming.

Seems like a major oversight by Ford. Hell, even a ten year old LX570 will let you do that?!

Have you not tried it? Does yours have CCD?
When in Eco, it softens the suspensions compression valving wayyyy too far and on backroads it throws the vehicle all over the places on larger heaves in the road at like 45-55 mph. I was testing the modes one day and my wife said WTH is wrong with this thing and I had it in eco mode. Its like a 1977 Fleetwood where it floats all over the road.

If you don't have the CCD, then your suspension will remain unchanged.

I agree completely. Sport absolutely does the best ride and handling qualities in my opinion but the transmission is just too dam aggressive in Sport so I rarely run it. I'm planning on sending mine to 5 star to tune and they can change those settings. I plan on putting the normal trans shift patterns on the Sport mode, so it rides nice and shifts normal.
If the road has a lot of like concrete seams and you get that harsh thump, then the normal mode absorbs all of that whereas the sport sends it thru the cabin. Thats the only time sport is too stiff. I agree they should be separate controls. I wonder what kind of computer genius could make us a switch to change that stuff? lol. I'd pay!

Sport mode for me eats at leas 2-3mpg just from the additional rpm.

So true. My family used to have a 78 Ford LTD Brougham. What a land-yacht. 460 police interceptor motor and suspension that would crush small livestock and still be porpoising 10 miles later. ....’Merica!..

I use it all the time in my F-150. It limits throttle range unless you put it too the floor. It also changes the shift points up and down. It's fairly effective as long as you don't bypass it by flooring it ;-)

I use Eco all the time. I assume that changes the shift algorithm to stay in a higher gear as long as possible. No jack rabbit starts. I find it downshifts aggressively when passing on 2 lane roads.

Today I experienced "Sport Mode"... in a word, WOW! I was really amazed in the difference between Normal and Sport; not only acceleration but stiffness in ride. I must say, this functionality is quite fun, but I don't see myself using it very often if ever. I have to imagine that will be a 20% reduction in mpg - maybe even with much sporting.

It's been in "Normal" since we purchased it and getting almost 22 mpg highway in cruise at 75-80 mph. I wonder what Eco Mode will yield and if it is too sluggish when passing on the highway?

I prefer Eco mode in our heavy traffic and on our 35mph tops streets in town. The dull throttle response makes it easier to drive smooth with all the starts and stops. Normal and sport throttle tip in is aggressive if your not ready for it I could see someone doing a throttle lurch bumping into a car ahead of you etc.

Sport mode 2wheel drive on dry pavement gives the best feel. A4 on dry pavement gives a little buzzy binding feel at times which is fairly normal with all AWDs.

Is there a way to set it so at start up its in ECO already or is it always Normal at start up? I haven’t gotten that far in my owners manual studies. LOL

How are you activating Sport mode in 2wheel drive on a 4WD Expy? Sport mode automatically activates 4A on mine. It would be nice to be able to get the handling of sport mode without holding the gears or going into 4A. The stiffness is the best part, IMO.
