Ok so this isn't exactly an expy, but I have always found this forum extremely helpful with a lot of knowledgeable people so I'm asking anyway...going to be a long post so buckle up!
Picked up a 2002 F150 super crew the other day. 150k, very clean truck. Owner said the windshield wipers didn't work, and that he was pretty sure it was just the multi function switch, and that he thought the blend door actuator was broken, because only the air would come on. Have had my expy dash apart before for heater core and blend door actuator replacement and very familiar with the process so no big deal to me as I got a really good deal on the truck.
On the ride home, the a/c would only blow hot. No matter what setting, just hot. Compressor clutch was not turning on.
The next day, I started investigating. Pulled every fuse, and checked. When I took the cover off the fuse panel under the drivers side dash I found that there was a jumper wire going from fuse 30 (i beleive, going off memory right now - 30 Amp fuse second to last on last row to the right) to a 10 amp fuse, I beleive the number 8 (again, memory). Fuse 8 seems to be for the GEM module and the radio, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Fast forward another day and I'm driving the truck, and without thinking I hit the button for the washer fluid and bam! Wipers were working. So for the hell of it decided to turn on the air, and low and behold it was working as well, compressor on and cold air! Switched to heat and heat came on as well. Has been working ever since.
With the air and wipers working, another problem arose, while in D or R, the radio would shut off.
So I know problems don't work themselves out, so I started doing some research. I found that a bad Trans Range sensor can cut out power to the radio if the sensor is "thinking" I'm cranking the motor. But what I'm not sure of is if that also affects the wipers and the compressor clutch/ blend door.
Here are my thoughts,...
Radio was losing power so previous owner ran a jumper from one fuse to the radio fuse, which also, if my research is correct, is one of the same fuses for the GEM module.
Electrical is not a strong suit of mine, I do own a meter and do know how to use it. I haven't metered anything yet, because honestly I don't know where to start. Never had an issue like this before.
I also want to add, that on the day I bought the truck, it had rained earlier in the day. While pulling fuses, I noticed the floor under the floor mats was a little damp...so now I'm thinking the gem module may be getting wet, and that it had finally dried out and things started working. Well, it's raining here now, so I guess a good indicator would be if the problems come back tomorrow.
