I started getting a nasty noise that I thought was the rear gears, bearings even thought it was the front end, i couldn't tell. Crack, Pop, nails on a chalk board for a few seconds after hitting a bump. Sounded like the rear or “something” was going to rip off. I had brakes that needed to go on the rear that I dint get to yet so I figured to go ahead and do them and hunt down what was broke.

The e-brake cable had been broke off on the drivers side. I dont know how long ago it was but there was a lot of rust on the area so I think its been a long time.Is it possible to just take off the rear e-brake on both sides with out it screwing something up? I want to take the assemblies off period.

I would say that in most jurisdictions, especially those that require an annual/semi-annual safety inspection, parking brakes are required equipment on all vehicles.

It is possible, of course, to replace all of the components for the parking brake, but if its that rusted out you may need a new backing plate for the drum portion... :(
