Engine Knocking/Ticking Noise Normal?

Hi,

New to the Forum. 2018 Expedition XLT.

Noticed a knocking noise 2-3 weeks ago.
Took to dealership was told this is normal for the 3.5L Ecoboost that all of them make a similar noise some are louder then others.

Now this could be normal just never noticed before. Here to confirm.

27000 on the truck. I purchased Certified at 22,000.
Engine at idle, after warmed up. Don't really notice on a cold start.

I have 17k on my clock and haven’t heard that at all and if I did I’d be curious to concerned.

I wouldn’t be concerned about that. Now if it chatters upon start up while it's cranking then you have an issue.

There is ALOT of pressure building up in these engines. Fuel pump alone uses almost 2200psi. Don’t think you have a problem here. FWIW, both my 2016s sound exactly the same

Bought mine with 22 miles, currently at 15,*** has done it the whole time whenever it feels like it cold or warm weather. Dealer said it’s nothing to be concerned about

From what Ive gathered, this is quite normal.
Phasers I think are more on start up. Like this dudes f150

Mine doesn't even have 2,000 miles on it yet and it has a noticeable ticking sound. I thought rattle at first, but its very subtle.... I'm not tuning it yet tho, so my warranty can deal with it if it ever becomes an issue. I'm sure its just fine tho!

Does it sound like mine above in the drivers wheel well heard best; no need to open the hood.

I'm sorry but they are pushing things way too far with all the VVT and direct injection.
It is a shame. They had engines pretty much figured out and perfected. Only problems were underbuilt parts and cheap plastic intakes etc.
Now for that "holy" increase in MPG they are pulling out a lot of stops. Not like this stuff is really new...just that is wasn't worth it for them to bother.
So do we blame the govt for requiring better MPG? I sure do!! But it wasn't worth it for car companies to use these designs and now they are running out of choices.
Pluses and minuses with all designs....and for me and many others the minuses way outweigh the positives.
Extra maintenance and repairs, often reduced longevity.
I really don't count two engines having the same longevity if one has 250K and has never had the valve covers off and the other has had the heads off. NOT the same to me.

They have exceeded the power levels that normal vehicles need or most people will ever use so also a waste.
2200 PSI direct inj mechanical pump just ****** me off!!!

We have left the Golden Age of automobile engines. We might end up in another good period and get back to where we were with low maintenance and repairs with long lifespan but t will be a good number of years if they get to there.
For the near future expect more and more new cars to become this way and the typical vehicle engine to need regular maintenance and even internal engine repairs at under 120-150K. When they are all this way we will have little choice and it will be the "norm" so it becomes acceptable. BULLCRAP!!!
Why is it only old people put their foot down and ***** and complain and point out things the way they are and what's wrong with the situation and why it shouldn't be that way???

Most just rationalize it and accept it WAY too easily.

On a positive note.
We had the golden age of muscle cars in the 60-70s and thought it was all over with the anemic 80-90s cars. Then HP came back (AND NO! It wasn't because of "technology" like direct injection) They could have done all of that in the 80s...It just wasn't cool or acceptable to society, parents, insurance companies, law enforcement etc.
They have surpassed the acceleration of the old cars...(of course they can do that with electric cars too)
Maybe after we are over the growing pains now, we will end up in a 2nd great longevity cheap cost of ownership/maintenance period and we might think of a 2004 5.4 as archaic and old design as a hand crank model T.
But following the trends now we will probably migrate toward all electric and gas won't evolve much more....for a while.
Humans have this ridiculous habit of getting bored and messing with things that don't need to be messed with. I'm fine with researchers and inventors doing crazy things but mainstream- if it ain't broke. don't fix it.
All big cycle and circles.
I can see the day when electric cars have dominated for 50-75 years and then a slightly new "technology" allows intenal combustion to do something better than it used to....and here come the new style engines- again!!!
Sad part of life. It is not new and exciting at all. It's a waste of time and effort and always destined to repeat itself.

Tick tick tick tick rattle rattle.

I had a tick in my Town Car 4.6 about 4 time after colder temp start up after about 40 seconds running. It would go away in few minutes or if I turned it off and restarted it would be gone.
I changed the oil and after about 3 days I haven't heard it since. That was 4 years ago.
That was at 218K. now coming up on 250.

They can keep their WAY OVERPRICED, maintenance and repair intensive newer vehicles!

2016 platinum EL 4x4 purchased new now has 40,000 miles and its tuned


2016 limited non el 4x2 purchased used now has 48000 miles and is not tuned. Both make this noise. All is normal

SO now we are to accept engine noises, expensive repairs under 150K on 60K vehicles.
I'll keep my town cars or my 03-04 Navigator. So quiet you can forget they are running. The way a luxury or any car for that matter should be.
Regularly 250K and never a valve cover off.
I specifically stayed 03 or 04 to NOT have 3v and not 06 to stay away from the 6 sp trans.

I also noticed this noise shortly after purchasing my 2017. Much like you I researched it and discovered it’s normal. It’s frequently blamed on the direct injection fuel pump.

My vehicle has been at the dealer for repairs a lot. I ended up switching dealers because the first one always seemed to hand me back my vehicle with a new problem. When I arrived at the second dealer I explained all the trouble I had been having and asked them to fix a number of things along with general direction to fix anything else it needs because, let’s be honest, I’m not a Ford mechanic and never will be so they ought to know best. Anyway, long story short, a number of repairs were made, including a driver side turbo, but this clicking was never mentioned by them as being a problem. It’s been back since for oil changes and a couple other non-powertrain things and it still hasn’t come up.

I should mention that I understand many people don’t trust the dealer or any shop for that matter, my self included, but this is one of two shops that have earned my trust. The other is a Toyota shop my family has used for the Toyota vehicles we’ve owned. The point of all this is to say that I trust if this was an issue that my ford dealer would have dealt with it.

Like I said, HPFP pumps at almost 2200 psi. Youre going to hear that.. but unfortunately there are some ppl that think if it’s louder than a hybrid, there’s something wrong with it

I posted a video of that a few posts up. Cam phasers are heard directly after startup and is a rattle or chatter. All the OP is hearing is the HPFP, totally normal

My 17 Camaro SS does that but maybe not as pronounced. In my case it’s the DFI causing the noise but my Expy runs a lot quieter but only have 3k miles on it. I’m sure it will be louder as time goes by.
