Engine Service Soon light

Hi there!!

I own a 2005 Eddie Bauer with 62.5k miles. It worked PERFECTLY until last sunday! While it was moving forward, suddenly started to work bad! Like in the movies when the car is ran out of gas that starts to stop and go.. Well it happened and the engine service soon light turned on. What would it be?

Dumb question but are you sure it didn't run out of gas?
