I have a 2001 XLT 5.4 - here's the problem. When I start it, most times it fires right up, but if I turn it off, when I try too start it up again within any time less than a couple of hours, it sputters, kicks and won't start. If I try to start it several times, it will usually start on the 5th or 6th try, but the temp gauge is all the way to the top (H). This will happen even if the engine isn't hot/warm. Other times, it just won't start, sputter, etc for about 5 or 6 tries and then start. Sometimes it will start but sputter and jerk for a minute or so, and then run fine. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

Since you mentioned the temp gauge is pegged hot while your certain the engine is not even warm, my guess would be you may have a faulty engine temp sensor or possibly wiring to it. Most of the programmers allow you to read misc sensors if you happen to have one. It would be nice to know what the engine temp reading is when this occurs.

If it is incorrectly reading high engine temps this will throw off the fuel/timing calculations.

If the engine temp is actually high you have other issues.

With my 2000 it uses a cylinder head temp sensor located under the intake manifold on the drivers side head. This is a dry port so there is no worry of coolant leaking out upon removal of the sensor.
