My 2003 Ford Expedition is my first Ford. My father always told me Fords were no good, we were a Chevy family and for a reason. Neglecting the automotive tradition of our family line I ventured into the wild blue yonder of the Ford about a year ago. In that time I've come to realize that the devil created Fords to get men to curse and swear and thus slowly degrade their consciences to where they are more likely to fall into more sinful habits like excessive drinking to cope with the unlimited amount of work, sweat and blood put into this desolate brand of motor vehicle. When you own a Ford you quickly realize you don't own it at all - it is on loan to you from the devil himself and you are nothing but a slave to the machine. Swearing, drinking, sweating, bleeding and dirty I've walked into my home many a times to the wide eyes of my children, my wife covering their little ears. Why? Oh Why did I not stick to family tradition? My '92 Chevy Silverado is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. My wise father was the original owner and I inherited it and cherished it even though it looks like the smelly end of a pony's tail.

So today I've decided I'm at the crossroads. While trying to diagnose a fuel pump issue my battery gives out. Get the battery checked out and it's good, stick it in another vehicle - it starts. Put it back in the Ford and it acts possessed like it was previously driven by the goat headed devil. Track it all down to some hidden battery corrosion on the negative terminal. Clean it up, get it behaving like a good little maggot only to notice bellowing white puffs coming out of the exhaust. Rev it up - and clouds straight from the sulfur pits of Hades start belching out of the rear end of this beast! I could all but hear the screaming of the tortured souls emanating from the smoking stench pit.

So now, I've got to decide. Pay a couple grand to get a head gasket fixed to then just start working on the fuel pump issue again and the other issues this vehicle has or throw in the towel, sell it as is at a very painful loss. I could probably tackle the head gasket myself but at 110F here in Phoenix (and it's going to get hotter yet) and not having a garage so rolling around the dirt is usually how I roll on auto repair - it doesn't sound too appealing.

Ever feel like getting rid of your dung heap Ford would be like untying an eagle that has been ensnared and living in a thorn bush for a year?

I have the opposite view and steer clear of Chevy. I got tired of the door panels ripping off the door skin when I got out of the trucks and the door handles coming off in my hand off the body when I went to hop in. Their interiors always fall into pieces along with the rest of the truck. Always stupid stuff breaking wipers, radios, backup alarms, seats, electrical gremlins, running boards. They nickel and dime you to death. Not to mention the poor quality of the “OEM parts”.

Drive it on over to the closest Chevy dealer. Trade it for another 1992. Problems solved.

Brian from reading all your posts, your a veteran mechanic! My 2000 has been trouble free for 3 1/2 years. I've had pushrod Fords for the last 32 years, and they were bullet proof. Unless you want 0 problems short of a Toyota, or Honda, they all have their issues. Your year as you know has the fuse box issue, but yours and the 04 two valve are the best motors. How'd you blow a head gasket? You got 2 choices find a low mileage motor, R&R it or move along. Working in plus 100 degree heat without cover, you might want to consider the latter!

I bought a 2003 Expedition EB back in 2010 and I can honestly says it is one of the best vehicles I ever owned. It has given me very little trouble over the last 8 years. I had a 97 Yukon and it gave me a lot more trouble than the Expy. I hope I don't jinx myself by writing this post.

You don't say how many miles it had on it or what shape it was in when you bought the truck. I agree with RW Carpenter, it most likely was not maintained.

P.S. There is no devil!!

Heaven and hell is right here now on earth. Enjoy what life and cars you have now! You think it's hard to borrow a tool on earth, can u imagine what collateral Satan would ask for a 1/2 inch drive torque wrench!

Moose, you did your homework! LOL I was a bit tongue in cheek. I'm actually thinking my head gasket problem may not be that bad and what I saw coming out the tail pipe was due to trying to start the engine when it wouldn't turn over due to another problem and it was just burning off gas when it finally turned over today. I'm not 100% sure yet. I was going to see how it reacts in the morning when I cold start it. But I know the 2V 5.4L is supposed to be a solid engine. The vehicle has 165K miles on it and my family and I love it - from the inside. From a DIY'er home mechanic viewpoint I absolutely hate working on most aspects of this vehicle. I don't mind it to a degree but sometimes I like to win a few... and with this vehicle I rarely win. Intermittents all day long. How do you diagnose something that's not acting up when you're ready to diagnose?

Pffft your demons aint none too crafty

Mechanical hell would surely involve not a single 10mm socket to be found, all ratchets slipping, and the closest thing to a 12mm being a stripped out 12-point 1/2"-er.

Oh and everything else only available in 1/4" and powdered zinc 3/8"

You forgot the devil making that bolt you need at 1:00 in the morning roll somewhere under the truck. He'll let you find it the next morning after you had to take a cab to get to work!

Speaking of bolts and demons and hell and stuff... I think vehicle engine bays are a direct portal into another dimension... you know, when you drop a nut or something in the engine bay and it completely disappears into another dimension? I think satan is sitting on hole hill of lost nuts (pun noticed). LOL

brah there's a doorway in every engine bay between the engine and the frame rails...everything that falls in becomes john malkovich

My older brother used to take my 10 mm, and a few other sockets and wrenches out of my toolbox when we were teens. I'd find them in the back of his 64 Pontiac LeMans. In those days I didn't have backup tools, nor the money. No wonder I never liked him. He was like Dickey smothers, and I was Tommy, but Mom sure didn't like him best!

Even though I prefer Fords my next option is Chevy. I like to have options. But really my thinking is I’m loyal to myself and my money. I’m not going out to buy a Ford just because I’m a die hard fan or it’s a family tradition or I’m trying to prove a point. I do though stay away from a couple of certain brands due to the parts and service availability. I can afford to go out and buy a Mercedes but I’ll go out looking for a Ford and if I find a great deal $$ on a Chevy I will probably buy the Chevy. I think brand loyalty is stupid because I know no brand is going to be loyal to me. I suggest you do wants right for you and your money screw what anyone thinks.

If I had to give up my Expys for a GM product I would only do it if I could get my '03 GMC Sierra Extended Cab Step Side Short Bed back. It was an SLT model and had every available option minus the sunroof. That truck was truly bulletproof. The only reason I got rid of it is because I went back to college full time and wasn't working. Couldn't afford to keep gas in it. I have seen it around town a couple of times and the guy that bought it from the dealer I traded it in at has used and abused the hell out of it. Who buys a beautiful truck like that and turns it into a work truck? I don't have a whole lot of room to talk though. My work truck is an '06 Expy Limited but it has a ton of miles on it and I got a better deal on it than I could have a good pickup truck of that vintage. Pick ups around here are through the roof for some reason. But I digress. Since getting into the Expys I am in love with them. They are great trucks but I wouldn't pay what they want for a new one these days. I think the last time I looked an entry level model was going for forty something thousand. I can buy a small house with that kind of money. Good Grief. I'll keep my two '06's till they kick the bucket.

One thing I learned in my 60 plus years of living is never try to relive the past, it never is the same! If that was true I'd be looking for my old Datsun 240z or my Honda cb750 bike. No unfortunately in life theirs no reverse gear, just a drive gear that goes way too fast. As I've said before your new car/truck is your new baby. It's funny how we forget the old one after driving the new vehicle a week or two. Love your wife and kids and hang on to them with dear life, the cars, let em go!
