Hey Guys, I started to drive away from my home last night and my 97 4x4 5.4 Expy just shut off, no warning, no shaking, just turned off. It will crank and crank but doesnt start. I have fuel in it, i tried the fuel pump reset switch and still nothing. I ran diagnostics and there were no codes found, then i did another extensive search and code P0232 (Fuel Pump secondary circuit high) code popped up. There is no check engine light on.

Anybody ever have this problem. I dont know how to test the fuel pump, i was gonna just try to unplug line by fuel filter to see if pump is working but not sure if that will help. I also read that there is a fuel pump sensor?
Any help would be appreciated before i tow my Expy off to the mechanic. I already bought the fuel pump with strainer/filter thing.

Thanks.

fyi, 2 trustworth mechanics have said its common for fuel pumps to go out. This same thing happen to my altima but it was a crank sensor.

Another way is if you listen near the fuel tank you should hear the fuel pump cycle for about 4 seconds when you first turn ignition on (But not crank). May take two people :). Turn off all accessories and a/c controls in off position first.
No sound.... likely no pump. Either pump or pump circuit may have failed.

Sometimes you can sharply rap near the pump and it may begin working. Pump needs replaced in this instance. This worked on a chevy my brother was using last summer. Was able to drive it to garage then as we were on vacation. No tools !!

So you saying, to a slight tap to the fuel tank near the fuel pump location and it may work enuff to start up? where is the pump located inside the tank? Thanks for the info.

More of a hard rap. May or may not work.

That Is exactly what happened to me on my expy. it would be perfect and then all of a sudden shuts off. I replaced my fuel pump and filter and everything worked perfect since then. OH and my fule pump went out with only 65k on her.

Also yyou might hear a humming noise, my expy never did that but my old jeep hummed before the pump went out. I would be willing to bet it is your pump.

Ross, you can try placing the ignition switch in the RUN position for a few seconds before starting the truck. If the truck starts up every time that way, then that confirms a fuel pump starting to go. Now, if the truck is still hard to start, it may be that your battery is getting weak and what is happening is the motor is turning slower, so it takes a little longer for the engine to catch. You can prove this by doing a "jump start" of your truck. If it catches right away, then you have your confirmation.
