Expy fuel mileage

My wife drives a2013 2WD limited W/117K miles on it. Mostly in town. We never see fuel mileage above 12 MPG. Winter or summer it is the same. Just wondering what I should be getting. I had all four O2sensors replaced a few months ago W/O remedy.

Just to add a few things:

Make sure to change the oil & filter regularly (5-10K miles), preferably with name brand Synthetic blend or Full Synth 5-20 or 5w30 depending on your climate & driving habits, same goes for the Air filter too...

Regularly check your coolant, brake & power steering fluids, keep full but DON'T overfill...

Try to cut down on hard stops & rabbit starts, nice & smooth whenever possible...

Definately something wrong with this vehicle. I have a 2011 Expo King Ranch with 199k and I am averaging 21mpg. I also use non-ethanol 92 octane mostly.

My '07 averages between 11.5 and 13.0mpg using an app to track actual mileage and fuel purchases. Note that this value is low by roughly 8% since I lifted her and put her on 35" tires. Prior to the lift, I'd be around the 14-15mpg range (highway).

MPG seems low for sure. Have an ‘07 gets 15 and ‘09 that gets 17. Both are two wheel drive. Are you getting any check engine lights? Would put on a full scanner and check for misfires even without light on.

I was battling low MPG and loss of power. My issue turned out to be a bad brake booster that was causing the brakes to drag slightly.

Jack up the front end and see how easily the front wheels spin. If it doesn't spin freely or keep a good bit of its momentum loosen the bolts holding your master cylinder to the vacuum booster and try again.

Also check the parking brakes are not dragging.

If there is no real rolling resistance then look into cleaning the MAF.

Make DAMN sure you use Motorcraft or NTK O2 sensors, every single Bosch O2 sensor I have ever installed (quite a few) resulted in an overly rich condition causing poor MPG. Also check for any and all exhaust leaks before the O2. That can introduce air pre O2 and give a false lean reading that causes it to dump in extra fuel.

My 09 with 220K miles would easily hit 18-19mpg on the highway after I figured that issue out.

You have a completely different engine than the original poster.

Check your vacuum hoses. Have run across a few times where either a line was disconnected and/ or dry rotted… this caused excess air flow into the system. With the extra air available the vehicle will add more fuel to avoid a rich mixture to be burned. Hence, bad fuel numbers.

The last vehicle I discovered this on was found to have a compromised hose at the PCV where it mounts into the valve cover. Replaced that hose, and saw gains immediately; according to the owner.

You can use a smoke machine to detect vacuum leaks. If not available, you can use carb cleaner to spray around hose connections under the hood. Listen for the change of vehicle idle when the carb cleaner is sprayed.

My 2010 4WD averages around 13 when driving around town and that's not babying it. On the highway around 65 to 75mph it will average around 17. Not too far off. It just depends how it's driven in some cases as well as maintenance.

There has been a lot of good suggestions here. I have a 2022 Expedition Platinum and am getting 23.5 MPG.

Bought my 2008 back in 2017 with IIRC about 98,000 miles on it. Was a fleet vehicle somewhere that had a spotlight mounted in the left A pillar. So, some sort of law enforcement vehicle, also had the funny flashers in the brake and front turn signal lights. No evidence of light bars on top. I get 16mpg no matter what I try to do, city or highway at 85mph going from NJ to Arizona. Currently has over 150,000 miles on it, as I use my Mark VIII most of the time now, which is getting 16 around town but 22 on the highway. Weird, pretty much every normal American car that I've owned has gotten about 16mpg, from the '66 mustang, to today's vehicles. Must be these lead feet.

I have a 13 EL 4x4 with 177,000 miles , I'm averaging 14 mpg on regular streets and 18 mpg on the highway. When's the last time you got a tune up? Or try some fuel injector cleaner, might help.
