I have been wondering if it is possible and if anyone has ever installed a newer ford hu with navigation and all the bells and whistles into an older expy. Mine is a 97 EB with the mach system. I would like to upgrade to one with navigation for my wife but I dont want a aftermarket one since they are all motorized. I do have kids and anything that i can make child safe, i would rather go that route. What all is involved? Does the HU contain all the stuff it needs or is there some other parts like for the satellite that is located elsewhere? If anyone has pictures I would appreciate it.

Just an idea I mounted and wired in a portable navigation into my cubby space down by the cup holders and hard wired it in. It is not in the open and would be much easier. Plus I can pull it and take it with me if I need it to travel in another car that doesnt have navigation.

I had thought about that. But I would like to have something installed so its cleaner looking and there isnt stuff here and there. I already hope to get the edge programmer so if i can keep the area uncluttered if you will thats what im after. i was curious if anyone has done it. I saw that crutchfield does have double dins for sale but it says that they dont fit. I dont see why the space cant be modified to make it fit.

Hello friend...an aftermarket navigation will fit in your factory location. These is a metal bar in the dash behind the factory head unit that you can remove and any and all head units will fit, Im in the middle of installing Pioneer AVH 4200 DVD as we speak...I however do not know about installing a newer Ford navigation, I liked my aftermarket unit plus an aftermarket unit will sound better...my 2 cents...good luck!

Well i did a bit more searching and found that several people have modified the opening for an aftermarket unit so i will go this route. how do the gps units work? Sorry im a bit behind the electronic times. I saw that some of the feedbacks on different units werent too good due to the maps not being able to be updated. Any feedback??

I have a Kenwood DNX-5140 and the built-in Garmin GPS works great. Maps can be updated via the usb connector and a laptop. I have heard that it takes a while to update though (maybe 1-2 hrs.). Love the unit, and about half the cost of an OEM Nav head unit.

they either come with a disc or 2, a seperate unit strictly for the navigation, or built-in with a 10, 20, or 30 gb hard drive...if $$$ isnt a problem go with the built-in hard drive...i have Pioneed AVDIC-3 w/2-disc...i dont use cd's so i just keep the east coast disc in and connect ipod to cable...
