To we oldtimers, they were complex beyond need and had several problems. But millions of trucks were built with them and most probably ran into their 200,000 miles without trouble. We hear about the problem ones and read of their problems and are disgusted by a design that needlessly introduced problems. In general, if well serviced, they are reliable engines that will give very good service.

I'm sure the first backyard mechanics back in the early 1900's thought working on a Model T was daunting, and had a lot of parts. Once they figured out what made the old girl tick, it wasn't so confusing. The toughest thing with working on the 1st-3rd generation vehicles is the cab over engine design. If the designers would have made a removable firewall to access the rear part of engine, or just designed it differently, it would have been a win win. But we all know working on most items on our beloved SUV's is like a neurosurgeon probing around inside a noggin, not for the faint of heart! Well, I guess if you want easy, better find a daily driver 1950's/60 car or truck to cruise around in.
