Ford's Rube Goldberg engineering.... but they do compliment the 3V head design don't you think ? What could possibly go wrong ....

except for the brain damage plug design, what else is wrong with the 3V head design?

Nothing, IMO. It's the bottom end of these engines that are where things are seriously lacking, but then, I don't think 75-80% of the purchasers ever planned to supercharge or put a turbo on a 3v Expedition.

Aside from the 2 piece plugs on the 2008 and down, the 3v are good engines, up top. Some will disagree due to phaser issues, but we all (should) know that good oil and frequent changing of oil prolongs the life greatly..

Funny, I got a 2007 Expedition with 184k miles a couple weeks ago. Was thinking about doing plugs and coils, and stumbled onto info about this issue. Looks like a nightmare to get them out (yes I know there are tools for it).

But with mine being so old and so many miles, assuming the plugs have been changed at least once, is it likely the ones that are in it now won't have this problem? How could I tell what kind of plugs are in it before taking any out?

Honestly, unless you have some kind of receipt from a previous owner, there's no way to tell until get one or more out.

One broke in my '06 at the thread...the hex came out broke at the threads, threads stayed in the head, the rest of the plug came out.

Thinking about replacing the ones in the 07 I bought recently, and found out about this issue.

So how big a deal was it to get them out with the tool? That top one in the photo looks like the entire electrode and ceramic stayed in and just the threaded "nut" part came out? What did it take to get the rest of that one out?

Ford lied about when they stopped using these plugs. I had the engine replaced in 2010 under warranty. The engine had a 2010 reman date. A few years ago I changed the plugs and had 3 of them break on me. The Lisle tool made easy work of getting them out.

Just because the engine was replaced, doesn't mean the tech at the shop used the new style plugs....engines don't ship with spark plugs.

Yeah, was gonna say, the mechanic who swapped the engine must have used the older plugs.

Either way, they're out now, right?
