Hello all,

I have a 2001 Ford Expedition XLT two-wheel drive with the 4.6 Triton V-8, 4-speed 4R70W transmission and heavy-duty towing package.

The truck has 240,000 miles on it, and about two or three years ago I noticed the engine oil level started dropping between oil changes. The odd thing is no white smoke from the tail pipe, but no leak spots on the ground either. At this point, I have to assume the engine is using some oil, but not enough to smoke (at least not yet).

So on to my question:

Where is a good place to buy a replacement crate (or a good rebuilt too) Ford 4.6 Triton V-8?

Not looking to replace the engine right now, it still runs great (runs quiet, smooth, no knocking sounds, etc), I just want to plan in advance for the inevitable.

Any help or advice would be awesome.

If you can turn wrenches without making things worse than they are, you may consider rebuilding it yourself. Not hard to do f you have the tools, patience and can follow directions without taking shortcuts. I'm old school - if you want something done right.....

If you don't want to go that route Ford has long blocks with a decent warranty. If you want to put in the 5.4 you may be better off sourcing a running donor.

Thanks for the input. I can do some maintenance work, but rebuilding an engine is unfortunately out of my league.

So I'm either going to have to buy a crate motor or have the original rebuilt. Just don't know which is the best route to take.

I do want to put a new engine in the Expedition when the time comes. The chassis and body (both interior and exterior) are in such good shape, worth keeping and doing a engine transplant.

A donor sounds like a good option, but if I went with one that had a 5.4, would I have to swap the transmission and diff too? Didn’t the 5.4s have the 4R100 transmission and bigger rear diff?
