2003 Expedition. When I fill the gas tank to full, I get a smell of gas. Both when running and when stopped. Doesn't seem to be coming from engine compartment. Smell goes away when tank is perhaps 3/4 full or less. Is there a seal at the top of the gas tank perhaps between filler tube and tank? Any idea how hard to diagnose and repair?

I have this same issue and was told the only option is to replace the tank which isn’t produced any more.

Yes, there is a spring loaded clapper at the filler neck/tank interface but it's not serviceable. It's molded into the tank itself.

Next time you fill up I would drop the spare tire and look for leaks in the tank or the filler neck itself.

I was quoted $1500 for a new tank from the dealer with a six month lead time. There are no aftermarket ones for the expy that I'm aware of. Worse case if you need to replace is to get one from the salvage yard which is what I did. To the happy tune of $100.

When you fill the tank do you notice any fuel running down the side of the fuel tank, or dripping on the ground, from other than the normal overfill tube at the filler neck? Just wondering if the filler hose is worn out or cracked where it fastens to the tank. I had that on my old pickup and it just required a new filler hose.
