The cluster as I understand is equipped with the PATS(Passive Anti-Theft System) and would require a reprogram for the keys to work and you being able to start the vehicle.

Here is a link that was given to me when I was contemplating the same swap when the odometer was going in and out.

But I ended up fixing the existing issue with my cluster by soliering the cold joints.

That PATS device is around the steering column where the key goes. I changed steering column out and had to switch that over as well because of this.

I was looking into changing my cluster until I found out about pats ll on my 2000 eb. I was wondering though: since pats is disabled once vehicle is running, would it be possible to change cluster while truck is running, and then calibrate needles?

My problem is a just bought my truck and I only have one set of keys. As a former Ford mechanic I believe you need two sets of keys to be able to reprogram.

I beleive that you can still swap out the face of the cluster with another as long as you reattach the OEM mother boards to the swapped cluster front panel. The mother board detaches from the front panel once you take the white plastic shroud off and you unplug the mother board. Then reattach the replacement cluster.

I would not suggest taking the needles off and reattaching those as it is hard to get them back to where they were. Once you take the speedo and tach needles off, the spring loaded dial pin unloads past the rest pin and is hard to get it properly positioned. Some say let the truck warm up and then take a picture of the cluster and needle positions at normal operating temps for reference to reinstalling the needles. That holds true for the 4 other guages, but when it comes to the speedo and tach, it does not work like that. I am pissed as it is now as I just learned that the hard way and now my speedo and tach needles are off alittle.

So this week I am going to a junk yard and getting another cluster and swapping out the cluster face with needles still attached and plugging in my OEM boards to it. Then I am back to spec, even after I just installed white face overlays. But I rather be correct on my guages then having white face guages.

I do like the link given a few posts ago with that aftermarket OEM replacement cluster. That is pretty sharp, my have to fork out 400 bones to get it.

No it would not be able to do that, as the mother board is programmed to that key registration. Taking the board out and reinstalling a new one will still not allow you to restart the vehicle. The PATS system would disable the vehicle from starting.

the 97-98 clusters are not interchangeable with 99-02s as far as i know. one has a mechanical odo and the other has a digi odo. among other differences.

Alaska is correct. I just had to replace my 97 Expy's cluster. A 99 cluster will not work with a 97 Expedition. Try Ebay, you can find a functional 97 cluster for aprox 100 bucks. (Probably cheaper) I also tried repairing the solder joints as i didn't want to drop any cash. It didn't work for me unfortunately.

I agree. 97 and 98 are compatible with each other and that's it. They have the analog odometer. 99 and up are digital and have some pats installed in the newer ones. I just recently talked to a bunch of dealer service departments and received a different answer each time. (go figure) One manager actually looked it up for me in depth and I believe in his response since he took the time to actually look.

I have a cluster that I got from a salvage yard for $50 sitting here waiting to go in my 97 and will get to it within a few days. Just got home from vacation. Mine has a non functioning tach and I am trying the cluster to see if it fixes the issue. I believe you can drive the 97 and 98's with no cluster installed.....that won't work with 99 and up. We will see.
