I think I've got a GEM problem, is there a way to diagnose it? I've got a 2001 Expedition. On Saturday it ran fine, but on Sunday it acted like the battery was completely dead when I tried to start it. The gauges didn't light up or anything. After a few tries, it started up, but there was a burning smell and the radio kept turning up and down and getting dim and bright each time. Because of the burning smell, I shut it off. I tried again today and it's acting dead again. I checked with a multimeter and the battery was good.
Some searching led me to reading about the GEM problem. I've never noticed water in the cab, but maybe it has leaked. I've got a Bluetooth dongle and tried to check for engine codes, but it won't connect to the ECU. The dongle lights up though, so the OBD plug has power. I've got a USB charger in the accessory plug that's also lit up, so it has power too.
Is there a way to test the GEM once I pull it? Will any gen 1 Expedition GEM work? Will a similar F150 GEM work?
