I have a 2004 Expedition...5.4L XLT package. Last week I was going to work and put the vehicle in reverse and noticed a grinding sound. I continued to listen to it and it got worse. That evening as I was leaving work I put it in reverse and as it was backing up it seemed to lock up. After a few minutes it freed up and I was able to get home. I have the rear end jacked up in an attempt to find where the roaring is coming from. with the rear end in the air I put it in gear and it seems to be coming from the rear of the tranny at the transfer case area. once it shifts out of first...the noise quietens down to where you can barely here it. The tranny shifts smooth and has absolutely no slip whatsoever. Ive ordered a new tranny but now im not so sure if that's the problem or not. Can someone please give me some direction here? I can still drive it...and it still shifts properly...however when I put it in 4wd the roar is really loud when before all this there was no noise whatsoever. Is the tranny replace a good idea or does it seem like the transfer case? 4wd appears to be functioning properly and the rear end is quiet.

Use a mechanic's stethoscope to locate the source of the noise and we can go from there. If you don't have one a wooden broomstick handle works just a well
