Guys got a 24' expedition and trying to figure out how to remove the plastic piece above the mirror very carefully and not break it in order to do a mirror tap. Any help would be appreciated along with what wires to tap.

I found it was easy to run the cable up through this plastic (by sliding it under the side), along the sun visor (tucking it into the headliner), down the A pillar (easy removal - but be careful as there's an airbag in there), and down to the fuse panel by your left knee. Took about 30 minutes.

I didn't need to tap anything though - this was for the official Ford 2ch dash cam, which plugs into the OBD II port.

Also, I needed power with the ignition off for parked recordings. Mirror tap won't give you that. But I guess for a radar detector that's not a concern.

Just curious, is this for the Thinkware camera? Been thinking about adding a 2-channel dashcam for a bit.

every single panel I've encountered has those plastic clip "tension holders" -- if you give it a light pull, you may have success. I don't want to tell you to break your panel but I've not run into ANYTHING that wasn't just a screw and a light "tug" to get things apart. Just offering my 2 cents -- not a way to necessarily get to what you need....

GOOD LUCK and don't forget to post back. I myself am trying to get better at that...

Sure is. It's pretty decent. No screen, so you connect with an app on your phone to get a live view, or pull down footage. The memory card is also removable so you can browse it from your computer.

I had to turn off the parked recordings as it was draining the battery too much.

Running the cable to the back was quite the ordeal. Routing it through the rear, through the cable gasket/boot into the top tailgate etc. Took hours to get it right.

Did the Thinkware not have a low-voltage protection built into the OBD harness?

It does, but the expedition goes into power conserve mode still, where it shuts off some systems like Ford Pass, remote start, proximity unlock etc. It would take about 2 weeks to do that.

There’s different selectable voltage settings in the camera that you can choose for low voltage protection. I didn’t have the patience to play around with them to find one that worked.

Maybe I’ll try it again and set it to the highest voltage. I’m only interested in impact parked recordings really. I had it on 24/7 recording before.

Gotcha, I'm sure the continuous recording was the culprit versus just events. Hopefully that makes the difference, would be frustrating to go to all that effort and have it not work as intended.
