Has anyone ever made their own roof rack?

The more I look at them the more i see there isn't too much to them. How do they usually attach to the roof?
I have a welder, access to metal- I just need some plans

here's mine, made from EMT. 1". the wires aren't there anymore and still need to put a deck on it, still thinking of options. Very very easy to make. Just used u clamps and bolted to stock rails, had to make extra little lock nuts tho.
