Is the new pigtail wire assembly a splice in plug and play? I noticed that the ground on the original is what is burning out and wondering if the replacement has the two ground wire system?

Problem: 2014 Expedition Limited, driver side only, the heat/cool function switch will illuminate for about one minute then go out.

I bought the connector and went to change it out but my driver seat has much larger controller with different connectors that have almost twice as many pins. All of the pins and sockets are in excellent shape, with no indication of failure.

As Written in previous posts the seat is heated and cooled by heated or cooled air. I just replaced the seat cushion and seat covers with products from the SeatShop, and I recommend that to anyone willing to invest the time. During that installation I was able to view everything inside the seat assembly. There is no connector under this seat like the one picture in previous posts.

My gut tells me it is something causing the current to limit and the software to shut the circuit off. If I didn't spend all day on the seat cushion and covers I might have spent more time on checking the fan. Winter is coming....

I've got an '11 Expedition XLT+. Had it since new. 300,500 on it now. I doubt you have a connector or control module issue. I think your cooling/heating blower module is gone on the driver's seat. They don't last. I have replaced three of them. Wife liked to run the seat heat 100% of the time she was driving but it's my daily driver now. It's not a hard job but you do have to pull the seat. Sounds like you have a lot of experience at that already. Part number is 9L1Z14C724C. They're available. https://www.ebay.com/itm/317077063256 When my next to last one went out I cannibalized it from the passenger side because they weren't available anywhere. Same part number driver or passenger. Once the cannibalized one went out I gave up replacing it. Looks like you can get on eBay for $280. That's very reasonable. If I thought I was going to keep the '11 much longer I'd probably replace it at $280 but I think I will sell in the next 6 months or so. My advice: cannibalize the module from the passenger seat and put it in the driver's seat to troubleshoot the issue. If the passenger side module works on the driver's side put the bad one on the passenger's side and be done. If you want to heat the passenger seat you can always buy a new module for it.

Hi Gumbyalso,

I did get a used fan from Ebay and swapped it out. And as you might think, it's used, but is it good? The fan came on but there was not change in temp on the air blowing out and the circuit shut down within a minute of operation. I might take a chance on new "New" module, but it would be better to have a way of checking the old by either powering it up on a bench or checking resistance.

Thank you for the response by the way. I hope that I can do the same for the group.

I'm sorry to hear you bought a used blower module. That's one of many items you don't want to buy used unless you personally pull one at a junkyard and only from the passenger's seat. Typically too much use on the driver's side. As I mentioned earlier, I recommend that you pull the module from the passenger's seat if it is known good and put it into the driver's seat. If you don't care whether the passenger seat is heated you can install the known bad one back in it and be done. I suppose it depends on how much whining you can take coming from the passenger side during a RI winter. If this was a control module issue neither seat would work so almost definitely the issue is a 9L1Z14C724C.

Hi Gumbyalso,

You were right about the used unit bought on Ebay, it was DOA and pretty upsetting considering the pain it is to install it. After that experience I bought a new one, plugged it into the seat module connector and tested first. I did get a refund on Ebay for the DOA module, so the only loss was my efforts which are more chalked up to learning the ropes. So I have my old and the let me keep the DOA and I plan to tear them down and see what fails inside.

I am amazed of how many points of failure there are for this system (connector, controller and module).

SM,
Thanks very much for the follow-up. Usually you only get that when someone wants to tell you how wrong you are/were. Glad to hear you have it fixed. In re-reading one of my earlier posts I see that I wasn't specific about buying a NEW one on eBay. I just said that they were available on eBay for around $280 and didn't specify new. I can see how I might have accidentally encouraged you to buy used. Sorry for that.

I haven't sold my '11 Expy yet and have not replaced the seat blowers. I regret that some mornings even here in coastal NC.

One of my sons moved to Newport a few weeks ago. He has gone through a couple winters in Bath so should be prepared for winter in Newport.

Gumby,

Winter in Newport is a challenge this year but I am so glad I bought the 26 Tremor and even more glad that I undercoated it before the storm.

I just noticed that I didn't update you... I traded in my 2014 for a 2026 Expedition Tremor. Some new ass for that seat in 2014 is thanking me right now. The seats in the Tremor are incredibly comfortable.

SM,
That 26 sounds nice. We are in the midst of that bomb cyclone that is hitting the NC coast so I should get to do a little snow driving myself when we start digging out on Monday. This is the first time the Morehead City NWS office has ever issued a blizzard warning. Should be fun. The state brines the main roads and maybe we'll get to see a snow plow.

Hi Gumbyalso,

I am heading to Virginia Beach (Little creek) to celebrate my buddy's retirement on the weekend. My first road trip in this new ride, and looking forward to it. Maybe we will see some snow on the way down. There is no way it will be like what we have here right now.

Glad I undercoated...

At 2000 miles... So far-So good.

Highway miles with average speed of 70mph, getting 18 on the highway. I was hoping for better.

If you want better then drop your speed to around 45 mph, run with your Expy empty, on flat ground, using premium fuel. Thats pretty much how manufacturers.....Ford, comes up with their proposed mpg on the window sticker. Its an average over a closed 10 mile roadway with speeds from around 80 ish to 47 ish.....thus the high and low numbers.
18 mpg at 70 mph is pretty darn good !!!

Thank you Grumpy!

Something to be happy about I guess.

I found that if you put the mode in sport you can just forget about any fuel savings but damn is it ever fun. I just wish the fuel tank was larger.

I am hearing that the standard length 2026 expedition has a 23.6 gallon tank.

Has to be some way to add more range to this horse.

I had to look up the specs after you said 23.6 for the standard length. Yes, it is 23.6 for the standard and 27.8 for the Max. That is a small tank for the standard given its gas mileage. My 2000 had a 30 gallon tank (that really had a usable capacity of about 28.5 gallons) and my 2011 has a 28 gallon tank. My 2011 still gets about 17 mpg at 70 mph (with the a/c off and no headwind). That's honest mpg and not what the display reads. I've found the display in the 2011 to be off by about 1.2 mpg on the high side. I think the K&N air filter helps a little but that's the only thing I've changed that could possibly affect mileage. Everything else in the ignition is motorcraft including the plugs and COPs. I get an honest 23 mpg at 70 mph from my 23 F150 5.0L (empty, no a/c on, not towing, no headwind, with bedcover). Even with all those caveats I think 23 mpg at 70 mph in a full size truck with a V8 is very good. Too bad they don't put the 5.0L in the Expedition.

Well, When I bought the Tremor, the range with a full tank indicated in the upper left corner of the upper display was listed as 419 miles on a full tank. That sounded about right for highway, and I was used to a 400 mile+ mile range in my last Expedition Limited, which was a 2014 with a naturally aspirated V8 and the larger fuel tank. I guess I was hoping for more range, like 500 miles anyway. I am thinking about a future fuel tank mod, but for now, there are many other higher priority items to tweak, just to keep things from prematurely failing.

BTW... 23MPG at 70 in an F150 is amazing.

My brother had an F150 with the Coyote engine, it was nice, I also questioned why they didn't drop that in the expedition. If I were to keep my 2014 I would have eventually attempted the swap on my own when the Triton died. The only fault I heard about the Coyote was it burned oil.

I had a 2020 F150 5.0L that was burning a quart every 3000 miles by 35,000 miles. Ford had agreed I met their threshold for having a problem. I wrecked it shortly after that so I don't know what the resolution would have been. My 2023 F150 5.0L burns nearly zero oil at 35,000. I do my own oil changes every 5000 miles and have never had to add any oil in between changes. Whatever was wrong with the 5.0L with respect to burning oil seems to have been fixed by 2023.

Nice...

I am a fan of the 5.0

My buddy that taught me the simple rule: "When in doubt - Gas it!" also used to say "There is no replacement for displacement". He was nearly an outlaw speeder (Speeding tickets) and later became a Cop, who also taught advanced motorcycling riding to the force. God rest his soul.

I would rather have that 5.0 in my Expedition then the 3.5 twin turbo HO. Maybe some day....
