My older sister who's now 72, lives in Washington, Utah. It averages 100 degrees all summer from late June till October. It's desert, and probably at one time had nice air. Didn't know that about Salt lake City, but doesn't surprise me. One of the things I love about living in a windy area like San Francisco is the wind blows so much pollution out to the central, and south valley's, away from us. San Francisco only has about 1 million people, but that # swells to 2 million or more during the commute into the city. One of the things that Ford was doing to offset the horrible pollution fines that all large corporate companies accrue, is to offset it with bicycle rentals, and in my case driving a shuttle van using a 14 passenger Ford Transit. Sadly, my company Chariot screwed the pooch on the latter last February. We cancelled all service March 5th. What's next Robbie Robot driving your Ford Van, Circa 2025? By then, they'll be all electric, or at least hybrid. Complaints will mean Robbie gets deactivated, same as being fired!

Our friend RJ'S not old enough to remember the burning lung smog of the Los Angeles basin, or other pollution riddled areas of the 60's and 70's. Picture today being behind a freeway of 1960's muscle cars, tuned for maximum performance romping on their throttles, and your behind them. It was horrible, and I was in my late teens/early 20's. The Government finally do what they should have done 20 years prior, finally made it safe to breathe again. It was and still is worst on older individuals, as well as youths 14 and younger. It always kills me, sorry for the pun, how officials step in right at the brink. We'll be like the movie day after tomorrow, where San Francisco and New York will have a 300 foot freighter running down 5th Ave, or in my case Market street. We'll all have to move into Mexico to keep from freezing to death. You think Chicago got cold last winter on that day it hit 40 below, try 100 below!

The 'LA basin' is the reason behind the lingering smog(its still a problem). The rest of the country is paying to have California emissions on there cars. Why? Gas cans have stupid spouts, that spill gas everywhere. They too are CARB compliant. Yes, the loons in NY state have adopted the same nonsense. The rest of the country did not. Auto emissions have gotten better. There are more vehicles on the road, than the 1970's. There is more pollution, just less NOx emissions. 300,000 40mpg diesel VW vehicles were removed from the road. They did not meet US emissions. Yes, a vehicle that gets 40mpg, fails emissions, but a Expedition getting 12mpg does? Crazy...

With all due respect, everyone is entitled to their own opinion (opinions are like azzholes, everyone has one and they all stink). To me this is a perfect example of why its great to live in a free society where the rule of law governs. Free society doesn't mean manufacturers can make any kind of vehicle they want and everyone gets to drive any car they want, it means the people vote for elected officials who enact laws. In this case laws that safeguard the air we breathe. I like to breathe, do it often! I saw what Beijing looked like at the last Olympics. Now that's crazy!

MrRJ - have you ever done an economic analysis of the overall effect of the vehicle emissions regulations? It gets pretty complicated and you have to factor in all the benefits not just the outlay of cash. Just something to consider.

Maybe if your State didn't CHOOSE to support so many Illegals, they might have had the time and resources to LOWER the gas tax to offer relief for folks...55.22 cents per gallon?

KARMA is a beautiful woman...who always gets her due....and she's going to have an **** in California for the next 6 years!

Don’t get me started on these stupid ******* gas cans. Keep your old ones the new design is stupid and dangerous. I tossed the newer ones in the trash heap. The seals rarely work and gas spills everywhere these politicians are dumb rock heads for thinking they can figure out a gas can.

Liberals for you, claim to want to save the environment. Proceeds to outlaw gas cans that don’t spill gas all over the ground. Sounds about right.

I just had the pleasure of using a (old type) gas can to pour gas into my Expy. I was down to 6 miles left because I wasn't paying attention. It leaked all over the ground through the filler tube area and it took me a "while" to figure out you need the Expy filler funnel packaged with the jack stuff to get the little gate to open so it goes down the hatch. Now I know. Learn something new every day. No way to add gas without that!

Is that the NEW EXPY?

will you be doing Krown or Fluid Film asap?

Great thread. 1) You can get gas in your car using 2 screwdrivers to push the buttons back for the nozzle if you really have to do so; 2) Californians like paying more for things like gas and everything, that is why they do this; and 3) my Expy gets 22 mpg at 60 mph , it is lifted with bigger tires and has the 5.4 l V8, so if your doesn't, maybe use more cruise control or quite floorboarding the accelerator pedal...)

I have a couple of 25 year old plastic gas cans I hang on to. I lent one to a good friend about 2 years back, but otherwise never use them. The only gas can that was leak proof, was an old military 5 gallon metal one that was given by a friend back in the 70's. With gasoline on rationing back in 1973/74, I kept 5 gallons around the side of my house. Great can, didn't leak a drop. Yeah, were a mess, but we could be like Cuba, driving a bunch of beat up 50's and early 60's cars and trucks. Like I posted earlier, politicians, and all the weenies in charge, wait till they get huge fines, or something is going to blow, before they do squat about it .

No Mr. Sticker the white limited in my avatar is not my new truck I’m still shopping around. It could be we will see they called me this morning with their “final offer” and I shot them back my “final offer”. At this point we are $400 apart so we will see what happens. Was just time to remove ol’ red lol.

I’m torn between a lower mileage older Eddie Bauer in the 08-10’ range or a newer Limited in the 11’+ range. I could pocket some cash and be in a slightly newer/ nicer truck than my 07’ or upgrade completely to a 12’-13’ or so.

I kind of made out on the insurance end for now at least, my passanger side rocker was rusty and crusty. But due to the accident the passenger doors did not open for the adjuster and all he saw was the perfect drivers side rocker. They payed out great condition on the truck so that was good LOL. I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t sweep the obvious little rust chunks off the running board.....

Holy cow $4 gallon?!? California has went off the deep end. When I was in Miami a few weeks ago it was also $4.00 for 87 octane but that was by the airport

That's the capless system for you, not the can's fault

You can just trigger the unlocking tab and stick a funnel in there

Here are some great reads/articles regarding how poorly designed the modern regulation gas can is:

https://www.aier.org/article/your-new-gas-can-still-doesnt-work

https://tucker.liberty.me/why-your-new-gas-can-is-ridiculous-and-evil/

Oh yeah baby, that's the one

For sheer "I must be an idgit or something" frustration and confusion, it's like RoHS lead-free electronics solder.... but with the added benefit of beaucoup spillage of fire hazardous crap all over yourself and the general vicinity

One thing I don't get: does this regulation somehow ban a spring-loaded, self-closing bolt-action style gadget that'd both unlock and vent the spout when triggered???

PS just how much electronics solder per capita lifetime usage do those silly Eurocrats think there is???? Surely there's plenty more toxic and less useful crap to eliminate

Btw, you know what just kills me?

They even managed to crush the AFTERMARKET attempt to let you fix the problem.... this despite any violations you may or may not commit with this piece of plastic being purely voluntary and of your volition.

What if you wanted to rig it up for something perfectly legal and inoffensive like non-potable handwashing water????

And what the hell happened to letting people make their own decisions, good or bad, legal or not, BEFORE cracking down on the wrongdoers????

What's next, banning metal pipes because they COULD be used for such maleovalent practices as whacking people upside the head or removing catalytic converters????

You can order one to NY and CA but it’s a company that calls them “watering cans” the plastic and spout just so happens to be rated for gasoline

And now you know why the pro-2nd Amendment people get all pissy when the government tries to institute yet another piece of gun control.

True

But with guns, at least there ARE certain unreasonable levels that there's a wide public consensus DO warrant some regulation...

You wouldn't want convicted violent felons or devout Middle Eastern fellows on tourist visas freely and legally renting a howitzer or a claymore mine from a perfectly legal strip mall rental shop or better yet via a cellphone app, would you?

Or middle schoolers being able to buy remote controlled quadcopters with minigun autocannons at walmart?

There are reasonable limits... emphasis on reasonable, and gas spouts that don't friggin work ain't reasonable

Know your pain... Google how to drive better to save gas. I read a few of threads and really you cannot do much to save gas with the expeditions. Tires are the biggest hogs. Stock size tires and a summer tread helps. Cut unnecessary weigh like tons of tools, and see if you put it on a diet. Combine your trips and keep up on oil changes and maintenance. Save you money for a 4 banger. I have a 2015 kia soul too for work.
