I've done plugs on several vehicles, but they looked much simpler than this. I have watched a couple of YouTube videos and they make it look pretty easy. However, in a couple of the videos I watched, they mentioned the plugs breaking (I think he was doing a 2000 model year expy). In another video, the guy used a 3/8" impact wrench. I don't know how in the hell he found enough room to use it, but he did all 8 that way. He also said to do it while the engine is hot and they would come out easier and be less likely to break.

Read this PDF:

The information does not apply to you.

Automotive spark plug change outs can be simple. On an Expedition the job is more involved. You will need to take your time, be patient, have the right tools, and do your research. Pay attention to details. Applying information to your truck that is inappropriate is not good (e.g. using impact tools to remove spark plugs on an '01).

This is a GREAT tool for Expedition spark plug changes:

Electrical tape it is!!!

Just had a guy at work replace #1 coil only...

As in, he only replaced #1 coil and didn't check the spark plug while he was in there? A bad plug could cause a misfire as easy as a bad COP condition. If the plug in #1 is old and neglected, chances are the rest are.

Did he use plenty of dielectric grease on the new COP boot? A pretty important step. Details.

I wasn't there when he did it, so I'm not sure. It is running much better now though, but I am still getting p0171 and p0174 codes. Gonna check that 90 at the back of the intake as soon as I get a chance. Need a live data scan tool, would make things much easier. I'm bidding on one on eBay now.....

Could be intake gasket or any other leak. If he doesn't find an obvious problem with the pcv elbow, a propane test will locate the leak. If not propane, then a smoke test will for sure.

With these two codes the first thing that occurs to me is the failed elbow because it is so common. That doesn't mean I'm right, it means I hope it's not an intake gasket. Also because the elbow is easy to check and cheap to replace. A common cause of a DTC that is easy to check and cheap to change out is as good as any place to start looking.

Haven't gotten a chance to do anymore work on it yet. Still registering same codes, but running well, no misfire. The only thing I can tell is that the mpg seems a little low. Overhead console says avg 11.8. I drive about 30 miles per day round trip. Half in-town and half highway. Thanks for the replies. I will update as soon as I can dive back into it again...probably later this week.

You need to learn to access the search feature on this site. Type in these codes there and you will find out how common your question is. You have a lot of reading to do.
