Hesitation and loud noise when stepping on the gas.

On my 2001 Expedition XLT when I step on the gas it makes a loud almost like a its gagging for gas. It's sounds like bah bah bah (i know i hate it when people do that I just have no other way to describe it). I have a feeling it is the gas filter that needs to be changed. The engine doesn't slip at all and runs great. Been noticing since its been making that noise that my MPG has gone down too. Any idea's and love reading the board.

i know the sound and feeling your describing just like it runs out of gas then catches again and repeat when needing the power

the fuel filter would be a good place to start should be done at least once a year any ways

CEL on? or working? maybe a good idea to scan for codes and see what the history says

I bet that your egr tube is cracked or broken.
