How Did I Do? New to Me 2000 Eddie Bauer

Greetings all,

First time Expy owner here. I've always liked them and their Lincoln brethren, but finally happened in to one. A while back, my wife and I had both been laid off and I had to sell my truck, which I loved. We were a 1 car family for months -seemed like forever. One day while on break at the new job, I noticed this baby sitting on a corner of a mechanic's lot with a for sale sign on it. Turns out it belonged to said mechanic. I asked him about it and here are the basics.

My new to me Expy (149K miles) was a one owner before the mechanic bought it from the original owners. The wife of the couple blew up the original 5.4 Triton when she failed to do anything about the knocking she heard. The mechanic found a low mile replacement 5.4 from a wreck and checked it all out, compression was 175psi across the board. He put in the engine, new A/C, new battery, 4 new Wranglers, he had it detailed and even though the paint is a 15-footer (it's got lots of little nicks and scrapes when you get up close) she drives great and looks respectable and the interior is quite nice.

I had a local dealer base-line it, all new fluids, power flush the brake fluid, change the power steering fluid, do a complete trans flush, service the transfer case, change the gear oil, the only mechanical issue was one leaking axle seal, so I had both done. The tech at the dealer said it's rock solid, no oil leaks, suspension solid, brakes, etc. good to go. The tech said it should easily be a good driver for years to come. We picked it up for less than $4K. How do you think we did on my new favorite rig???

I love my Expy!

WeatherTech mats and vent visors on the way, plans for a true dual exhaust -would like some suggestions there, and window tint to be done soon.

I'm only getting 10.9 mpg, but it's the 5.4, is that pretty much average? Not that I care too much, because it isn't like I'm making payments... he-he! A good feeling!

It depends on the driving conditions too. I used to get 14mpg with my '98 but didn't have many stops and good cruising speed. Now with my '03 I get about the same as you but my drive has a lot more stop and slow traffic.

Congrats on your new to you Expy, I bought the identical vehicle last March (paid right around 5000 with 124,000 miles) and am loving it also. Mine has AWD with 138,000 and runs like new, I have been averaging 10.9 - 11.3 around town and close to 16 on highway, 12.5 pulling pop-up camper with 2 kayaks on my roof. Just did all my fluids, put in a Pioneer head unit (double din) last year and having a 10" sub in a Stealthbox put in on Friday. Enjoy your truck, hopefully gas prices will go back down a little haha.

I think you did very well but time will tell. Congrats! You look like you may be running larger than stock tires so I would say your fuel mileage is about the norm for city but on the low side of the range.

Mine gets about the same but it has been slightly modified. If I drive very conservatively I can do better but find it very difficult.. lol.

Wholy-Expy! We have TWINS!!! He-he!!!

Yeah, I noticed that mine has what a appears to be a change-on-the-fly switch that says A4WD-4WHI-4WLO (IIRC) so I'm guessing it's all wheel drive, with all the power to the rear unless the computer senses the rears slipping -maybe why that's why it won't do a burnout, woulda thought sure it would with 350lbs of torque. Also probably why the gas mileage is sub-11mpg, not too worried about it, but I do wonder if getting a low-restriction exhaust and maybe a better air intake would help a bit, don't see how it could hurt.

Any way I slice it, I love this truck! I do need to get the driver's seat fixed though, the lower left hand side is completely lacking in support. I guess 14 years of people sliding in and out have worn it out. A common problem I am guessing?
