I have 97 expo with an e4od transmission that is about to get a LOT more power. I was just curious just how many ponies it could handle stock. I bought it's big brother, the 4r100 but it is kinda proving to be a pain because of needing a different wiring harness and PCM. Not the end of the world but if the one that I have now could be used (e4od) then I will just keep it simple for right now as I am running out of money quick.

I'd talk to the folks at Monster transmission. They make a kit that replaces all the weak links in a trans.

I know about monster transmission. They come with a monster price tag as well. For right now I have to wait on building up the trans. Too low on cash, wife and three kids. Can't go for broke on it at this time.

Its torque not hp that can kill trannys. Unfortunately if you are doing a lightning conversion it is monster torque that the roots blower really excels at and its instant torque right now.

I doubt anyone can really give you a definative answer on how much power the E40D will handle other than the factory rating. I believe it is 900ft lbs. But this is the torque that the tranny is rated to handle not your motor torque. The typical torque converter can multiply torque by up to 2.5 times when you hit the throttle so do the math.

A lot of it will depend on how hard you drive it. Drive like granny and it should last forever....well depends on the granny. Towing obviously puts more stress on the tranny. You can also program in more torque management in the tune or even detune for less power till you can upgrade tranny. Also lower gear ratios...3.73's or 4.10's can put less stress on the drivetrain but obviously more on your axles.

Or you can just hope for the best. That has been my approach with my 4r100...lol.
I am determined to find the weak links in the expys 4r100 but so far she has handled what I have thrown at her.

Look up brians truck shop in Arkansas. He builds e4od for the powerstrokes. Will handle anything a gas engine can throw at it. Better then monster.

Thanks for all of your thoughts guys! Especially you toms89! You have been a great help for me in this project! I too have heard of the durability of the 4r100 thats why I bought one. Is yours stock? I may have to have my 4r100 installed at a later date unless I can find a harness that is not cut somewhere.lol Also, the 4r100 that I have came from an 03 Navigator and my programmer is telling me to get the PCM from that vehicle. Does it really matter as long as the PCM is meant for a 4r100? I just was not sure if the PCM from a navigator would plug into my expedition wire harness. And yes I know that they are almost the same thing. I have not yet purchaced the new wire harness, ECM or PCM as I am still trying to get a grip on what one I should get.

A 4r100 is basically an upgraded e4od and it is what is behind the deisels up until the 6 speed came out. it is strong as any stock tranny. a programmer to change the shifts and up the pressure[ a little] can help also.
