I have 97 expo with an e4od transmission that is about to get a LOT more power. I was just curious just how many ponies it could handle stock. I bought it's big brother, the 4r100 but it is kinda proving to be a pain because of needing a different wiring harness and PCM. Not the end of the world but if the one that I have now could be used (e4od) then I will just keep it simple for right now as I am running out of money quick.
Its torque not hp that can kill trannys. Unfortunately if you are doing a lightning conversion it is monster torque that the roots blower really excels at and its instant torque right now.
I doubt anyone can really give you a definative answer on how much power the E40D will handle other than the factory rating. I believe it is 900ft lbs. But this is the torque that the tranny is rated to handle
not your motor torque. The typical torque converter can multiply torque by up to 2.5 times when you hit the throttle so do the math.
A lot of it will depend on how hard you drive it. Drive like granny and it should last forever....well depends on the granny. Towing obviously puts more stress on the tranny. You can also program in more torque management in the tune or even detune for less power till you can upgrade tranny. Also lower gear ratios...3.73's or 4.10's can put less stress on the drivetrain but obviously more on your axles.
Or you can just hope for the best. That has been my approach with my 4r100...lol.
I am determined to find the weak links in the expys 4r100 but so far she has handled what I have thrown at her.
