if its solenoids you can do that! they are like 50 bucks each, but then again, let solsimo or racenut get in this

Let's hope so, that would be a life saver. I'm just praying that it's nothing major.

I'm tired of having my friends drive me to and from work everyday.

Everything on the programmer was set back to factory settings when the problem first initiated. I guess I'll do what you guys said this weekend, drop the pan, clean the filter, and flush out and replace the fluid.

If it ends up not working, do you think the solenoid would be the next step? If so, is it a DIY kind of thing, or would I need to take it some where?

Once again, thanks for all the help. This sucks, I miss driving my truck.

When you have the pan off for doing the filter you will see the solenoid PACK unfortunatly unlike other transmissions ( like stated above about the focus which has individual solenoids) all solenoids are in a single pack on the 4r100.

It is easy to change unbolt/unplug and put the new in but since it is a solenoid pack the price is about $200. Do NOT cheap out and get a reman pack, if possible get a NEW pack because the remans usually do not last as long or work as well.

Also not sure which trans fluid you are running but Ford now recomends Mercon V for our tranny's instead of regular Dex/Merc.

And since your truck has probably never had a trans service do not be surprised if you find a "plastic cap" floating around in the pan. That cap is used at the factory when the truck is built to keep anything from falling in the trans before the dipstick is put in.

How do I figure out which transmission I have? And is there a walk through with pictures on how to disassemble?

you have the 4r100, when you do the tranny oil change, it should be obvious how to get to it when you get in there.

Yeah if you have the 5.4l it is going to be the 4r100 but if you want to double check then look at the number of bolts that hold the transmission pan on:

4r100 = 20 bolts
4r70W = 14 bolts

I don't have any photos but if when you change the filter you can not figure it out, let me know and I will pull the pan off of my old trans so that I can give you some pics ( that will take a couple of days thou because it is at my buddies house 60 miles away ).

Also these tranny's come with a REUSABLE pan gasket. Do not throw it away and do not use the POS rubber gasket that will come with the filter. Just clean the factory one with a bit of brake cleaner ( do the inside of the pan as well, but DO NOT spray it up into the transmission ) and put it back in. They are great gaskets and have a metal core so you can not over tighten the pan which means it won't leak.
