I Noticed this on the Roof of My '05 EB Expedition

Does anybody else have this? It looks like it might be a hole plug but I don't see any indication of anything ever being up there. There is no sign of leaking

It located just forward of the roof rack in the center of the roof.

My first guess would be an antenna hole for a two way radio. Looks like it was all welded up.
Was your Expy a fleet/police vehicle in a past life?

If bought used, it was some type of fleet vehicle with an antenna. Instead of putting a rubber plug in, it looks as if it was sealed up. Metal is pretty thin, so don't think it was a weld, but something like JB Weld

It looks like a silver cap with some kind of black tar-like stuff around it or maybe rubber or silicone.

I think the truck was originally owned by the Michigan highway department but they only put 9,000 miles on it before they auctioned it.

It's an 05 with how many miles? I wouldn't worry about it. It's 8-9 years old as it is depending on manufacture date...

It has 119800 miles on it and was manufactured on 3/21/05

Doesn't look like (based on your post in the other thread) that it was a fleet vehicle, so whatever it was, it was put on either by the dealer or in the aftermarket. It should be fine. Just don't play with it. Don't fix what isn't broken...

I agree with rexster314. IMO, I would place some layer of touch up paint or clear paint or polish like clear plasti kote just to make sure it stays sealed when body flexes and temp changes. Maybe it has not leaked yet but give it time it will and leave you a nice spot to remember it by.

Just curious, is the stuff still sticky? If it's still sticky, it's a kind of insulation stuff we used to use when installing aftermarket a/c units in cars. Real gummy used it around the holes we had to make in the firewall and radiator supports. I can see someone using that stuff to plug a hole

That is exactly what it is. I touched it, it's still a little tacky and soft.

What I thought. It will dry out eventually and crack away. Better to fix it now than later. It's like an asphalt tape stuff, really gummy

I thought the carfax report said it was registered by the Michigan Motor Vehicle Department but that apparently is who reported it. So I really have no clue as to who the first owner was.

Yes I know that. But not a true fleet vehicle in the sense that the etis listing says "less fleet vehicle..."

It's baffling to say the least.

What's weird is that they owned it so long ago, but the repair seems recent. Almost makes me wonder if the previous owner was a volunteer fireman.

Yes it's very strange. It doesn't seem to leak. I have a friend that has a body shop I'll check with him to see what he recommends.
