i decided it was a good idea to dump coolant on my 5 and 6 ignition coil thus prompting a misfire. I took apart all the coils and swapped plugs and got all new boots and springs, dielelectic greased the tops of the plugs and springs, and slapped it all back together and they have been sparking fine for 30000 miles. The springs make a difference. I should get new coils because once and awhile my engine wont run as smooth due to humidity but as long as its still firing i will go with it.

I changed all my plugs and COP's at one time on my 97 EB.The rear 4 plugs are a pain in the A#% to get too but I haven't had a problem since. I bought the same exact plugs that were in it from autozone and got the coil packs off of Ebay. I think all 8 Coil packs were $100 total with free shipping and they're suppose to be the higher end ones that have the red finish on them. That was a year ago and shes still running strong.

Lots of guys hate the accel cop coils. All I can say is I've installed them on a few 97-03-04-08 5.4 and 4.6 with absolutely zero issues.

He'll my accels have been on my expo 8 years with tr6 plugs running 16psi boost and they still have enough in them to make a spark.

regardless of brand or price.
If you get good ones they are great and if you get bad one well you just have to get more and pay more. What works for one person doesn't always work for the other person.

i got the summit racing brand ones for 170$ and it was worth it fixe dthe missfire too

Did you grease up the insides of the boots?

When COP boots are generously coated inside from top to bottom, a lot of protection is afforded. The rubber won't quickly breakdown and fail. Misfire caused by current arcing from the spring to the wall of the plug well is prevented.

Many guys only apply the grease to the tip of the spring where it contacts the spark plug to seal the connection. This is not a bad thing to do but is an incomplete application. Dielectric grease is electrically insulating, waterproof and withstands high voltage. It will keep COP boot rubber from sticking to the spark plug or becoming prematurely brittle due to exposure to heat. It will better seal the boot and limit the effect of moisture on ignition.

It could be that success or failure of a COP is more influenced by its careful installation than by its price.

Thank you, Bad Ronald....I found that to be very informing.

The 4.6l in my '01 used to throw occasional misfire codes during damp weather or light rain. I talked to a Ford dealer tech who recommended checking the condition of the COP boots before spending the money on complete coil replacement. He said not to be stingy with dielectric grease. When I did the 100K sparkplug replacement I gave the Ebay coils a try for a few dollars more than the cost of boots only. No misfires since.

I have heard of guys who will actually wash their engines and experience no misfire codes. They claim they do so with confidence because their COP boots are properly sealed with the grease. I wouldn't try that myself, but I can understand the reasoning.

A ton of great info in this thread. I bought my 98 Expy on Dec 27th. Since I had the dang thing start missing twice at the same stop light at roughly the same time in the morning two weeks apart.

With no place to work on it myself, I had a local mechanic do diagnostics and repairs. Coils cost me $67 ea plus labor of $100. Plan on buying the 8 pack of Excels hopefully next month. Plan on using the grease trick.

This is all new to me, still used to a distributor cap and rotor. But, they are nothing compared to a Wankel engine I had in a Mazda RX2. That had two distributors and 3 sets of points. Bought this when I was young and stupid!

My Expy most have thought I was a Rockefeller because it's been costing me a small fortune since I bought it

just an FYI, summit also has summit brand performance coils all 8 for 179. I feel your pain with the autozone price. I went there and asked for all 8 and they said that'll be 436. WHAT!!! I just turned around and walked out. lol Ordered the summit coils with next day delivery. I have had them on for about two months now, and I love the throttle response/new life to Blue Thunder (98 eb) I take it to the sand dunes almost every weekend with no problems.

Woah .the Wankel I had in my RX7 was one of the coolest motors I've ever had. But it sounds like they "fixed" it because I only had one distributor. I miss that car.....

I just threw on a set of eBay coils and the difference is night and day. They work great. We'll see for how long.
